Similarities Between Horus and Jesus

posted 13th Oct
1.) Both were conceived of a virgin. (There is doubt about Isis because she was married to Osiris).

2.) Both were the "only begotten son" of a god.

3.) Horus' mother was Meri, Jesus' mother was Mary.

4.) The "foster father" of Horus was Jo-Seph. The "foster father" of Jesus was Joseph.

5.) Both "foster fathers" were of royal descent.

6.) Impending births of each were announced by an angel to their respective mothers.

7.) The coming of both was heralded by a star (Sirius for Horus, a "star in the east" for Jesus).

8.) Birth announced by angels.

9.) Announcements witnessed by shepherds.

10.) Herut tried to have Horus murdered. Herod tried to have Jesus murdered.

11.) There is a break in life history for both between the ages of 12 and 30.

12.) Baptized at 30 in a river (Eridanus for Horus, Jordan for Jesus).

13.) Horus was baptized by Anup the Baptizer, Jesus by John the Baptizer (aka John the Baptist).

14.) Both baptizers were subsequently beheaded.

15.) Both were tempted on a mountain (Horus by Set, a precursor for the Hebrew Satan; Jesus by Satan).

16.) Both resisted temptation.

17.) Both had 12 disciples.

18.) Both walked on water, cast out demons, healed the sick, and restored sight to the blind.

19.) Both were transfigured on a mountain.

20.) Both gave what came to be known as "Sermon on the Mount".

21.) Both were crucified (some do believe that Horus died by scorpion sting, however).

22.) Both were accompanied by two thieves at their deaths.

23.) Both descended to hell.

24.) Both were resurrected after three days (though Friday night to Sunday morning isn't really three days, it is still stated that Jesus was resurrected after three days).

25.) Resurrections were both announced by women.

26.) Both are expected to reign for 1,000 years upon their return to earth.

After reading the similarities between these two (Horus is not the only god with similarities to the life of Jesus, just the most well known), how does one reconcile that in their minds? How, as a christian, do you tell yourself that YOUR version is right and the others are wrong?

I believe that every religion is just built upon one another. You can trace just about every thing written in the bible to ancient mesopotamia. Then ancient egyptians took what they wanted from mesopotamia and built their own creation stories, then greece took from egpyt, then rome took from greece, etc.
My minor in college was classical studies and I always found it fascinating that each religion is so close in similarity if you are open minded to look!

I call myself a Christian, but I am very open to other religions and their point of views. I do not necessarily believe there is only one way.

I don't tell myself or anyone else, they are wrong, I'm right.Even if they don't believe in God I don't tell them they are wrong. Believing in God is a choice, it's a choice I choose to believe in. I shouldn't have to defend what I believe in just as someone who doesn't believe or someone who believes in something else, shouldn't have to defend what they believe it. It's so easy for people to point the finger at you when you believe in God. They want you to have all the answers. You have to explain why you believe, they ask you all sorts of questions. There are tons of Christian/God/Bible posts in the DD. So to answer, I don't tell anyone there version is wrong. I follow my beliefs and try and understand we are all able to choose if we believe in God.

Actually, you SHOULD have to defend your beliefs. You should be able to tell others why you believe what you believe. I've had to explain many times over why am an atheist.

It shouldn't be all that difficult to explain to me why, after seeing all the evidence to the contrary, you still choose to believe that the christianity story is the right one.

It's something in my heart and something I shouldn't have to explain to anyone, unless they want to know how God has changed my life. I don't think anyone should have to defend there beliefs. I can tell others why I believe, but it's so easy to get bashed for believing in God.
