comprehending problems?

posted 13th Oct
My daughter is 8 and really is a good student, last year and this year I have had parent teacher conferences telling me that she has a comprehension problem? She reads all the time and loves to read, and reads great, but she can read a whole book and at the end not know what it was about. Well its affecting her grades. Her reading grade is a D. She had a B in science bc she loves it but it got lowered to a d bc they had a test on dinosaurs and had to read a passage about it, and answer questions and got an F and it totally dropped her grade. Her reading scores shes getting 0/100? How can this be? Has anyone had this problem with their children? What can I do to help her? The teacher says she tries to give her multiple step directions and she cant remember them?

It isnt uncommon for kids to have a hard time comprehending reading. Some kids do have issues retaining the information they just read. (I work in the school district, and am a sub teacher).
Maybe, she needs to reread things more then once. Maybe it just doesnt stick the first time.
How is the teacher grading?
Maybe when she's reading at home, stop her every few paragraphs, and have her summarize it to you - or maybe you can ask her questions to get her memory kick started- like ohhh yeah, i member reading that!

My daughter has the same problem. She absolutly love to read and read pretty good. At age 3 she knew how to read a lot of words. But when the teacher gave her test she totally fail the test because of comprehension.

In our case the school gave her some tutoring. It was like 4 months twice a week. They made her read and answer question in full sentences. My daughter at first got really fustrated because she didn't knew the answers but she had a pretty good tutor that helped her a lot.

This year I moved and I had to chenge her to a new school and this one doesn't offer tutoring like the other one. She still having some problems on the comprehension but not as bad as the were before the tutoring.

And extra advice that you can try at home is making her read a small book and you read it too and ask her question and reward her whenever she answer the question the right way. I try that and Gaby gets more excited on paying attention to what she reads.

I hope this help for you.
