If you are Deaf or know someone or about it.

posted 11th Oct
I have to write a paper on a technology for Deaf people, and i am thinkign about doing the flashing doorbells and similar items. if you have some info for me please respond.

here are the questions i have to answer...
What was the impact of this technology on the era it originated? (the positive and negative impacts) What about now? Is it still used? Why was it created? Is it accepted in the deaf community?

or if you have an idea of a better technology i could use feel free to suggest it.

Dh & I have a deaf friend named Mark.
He uses the flashing doorbell & alarms. He telephones us using Relay call, which is where he is on video chat signing with a translator, who talks for Mark. When we are together, he uses his phone to type messages to us, or just plain old paper & pen.
I'm trying to think of more technology he uses....

can you answer any of the questions i have to answer? it is easy to find stuff but nothign that says how Deaf people reacted to it when it came out, and what they think of it now.

nu-uh! i need to get me one of those. i'm always scared when i'm home without SO because i won't be able to hear the fire alarms going off or the smoke detectors. we live in an apt building, and believe it or not, the building next to us, their fire alarm was going off the other day and the only reason i knew was because there were 4 fire trucks outfront.

damn. it's expensive to be hard of hearing. they have low-frequency smoke alarms (which i would be able to hear) and it's $160. that's bs.
