Has anyone had cytotec to induce miscarriage?
posted 11th Dec '06
I had my first unltrasound this morning at eleven weeks and my Dr. could not find the heartbeat and by the size of the baby it looked like it died a couple of weeks ago. He gave me a prescription for cytotec and I was told to take four pills today and if nothing happens in 24 hours then another four pills. I guess I am suppose to start experiencing cramps and bleeding. Has anyone had this medicince and if so what was your experience like? I feel like I am in shock right now, like it's not really happening and I shouldn't take this medicince just uncase he was wrong and they baby is alive. Weird eh? My husband and I had a good cry this morning but we know it wasn't a healthy baby and it just wasn't meant to be. Just feeling so weary today!

I'm so sorry to hear about your loss. I'm experience a miscarriage as I write this message to you. While I didn't take what your doctor advised, I did take some herbal stuff to help with the miscarriage. I found out at 10 weeks my baby died a week before. I didn't begin to pass the fetus until about three and a half weeks later.
I know what you mean about not wanting to take anything to induce a miscarriage. I felt the same way. You know...just in case the ultra-sound tech or doctor was wrong. But I think we both no the cold truth. Again, I'm so sorry. I know how you feel just waiting for a miscarriage when you know there is no hope for your baby. When you begin to miscarriage, you will experience similar symptoms as you do right before you start your period.
I try to think about this as a blessing in disguise. My baby was not normal either and nature had a way of taking care of that. I know that doesn't take any sadness away, but it only offers some kind of understand in these moments of sadness.

Thanks ladies. I feel much better today already. It feels surreal that's for sure knowing there is a dead embryo inside of me and I would like to just get this stage over with now. I am very scared to take these pills though and bring on the pain but I know I should.
Again, thanks for all your words of comfort. I know so many women go through this and so many know how I feel. It's too bad we don't miscarry right away and that it can just stay inside of you without you knowing for so long. I was just beginning to get excited about almost being done my first trimester and bought maternity clothes off of e-bay.
Anyway, wish me luck with the miscarriage part and I am so sorry about your loss too.

hi there
i just read your reply, and my condolences to you and your family.
i came accross your post because i'm currently going thru the same thing right now. we found out that our baby had definate abnormalities. this was at 19 weeks of pregnancy, a week later i visited my midwife to check and see if she was still alive. we could not find a heartbeat, that time would be her gestational age of 18 weeks (my 20 weeks of pregnancy, minus the 2 weeks for her actual age). that was a week ago this past thursday and i am still waiting to pass my little girl. my belly has definately shrunk and i've been having uterine contractions (gentle, not painful) for the past week and a half. no signs of her yet.
how are you doing? i'm worried that i am at risk of infection, but i reading posts it could take as long as 4-6 weeks? is that dangerous, and will my body start attacking itself? my WBC counts are slightly above normal but i am in no danger at the moment, but the last thing i want to do is put myself at risk as well.
i hope everything is ok with you, and i have a feeling i know what you are going thru. the waiting is the tough part, and i continue to wait. i have half a dose of cytotec but am not sure if it is worth taking.
i am currently taking blue cohosh, red raspberry tea leaf, and cottonroot. i've also gone through one session of accupuncture and constantly rub reflexology points on my body (just incase this is of any help). if you like i will keep you posted on my condition.
best wishes to you, my thoughts and prayers are with you.

Cytotec is a class X drug.
Under no circumstances should it be taken if you have a viable pregnancy, due to it's likelihood to cause miscarriage.
However, I've read documentation that shows it is effective and safe if used to hasten a miscarriage that has already occurred.
The main concern I'd have with cytotec is that it has a possibility of causing uterine rupture, which can be fatal. I personally would be very wary about taking this drug, due to all the negative documentation I've read, but it is somewhat common for use to help speed up miscarriages.
Your doctor may have had no problems with his patients taking this drug, but I'd steer clear of it myself.
I'm very sorry to hear of your situation, best wishes to you and your husband.

I have not had any experience with this drug, but I suggest that if a person is having any doubts don't take herbal or prescription drugs and definately don't have a D&C. The doubts will only grow as time passes. Wait out nature. The majority of people have a natural miscarriage and are perfectly fine (of course most of these people do not know they are pregnant). I read a book after my miscarriage and it talked about one mother going to get an ultrasound and finding out that one of her twins had died. She carried them both for a few more weeks. The living twin was fine. I believe that if a twin can live in the same uterus as a dead baby then a mother is going to be perfectly fine carrying her dead baby for a few weeks. I carried mine for over 3 weeks. There is an occasional occurance of infection which will be accompanied by a high fever. If this occures a D&C will be nessacary. That is the point you would not want to let it hurt you. If you are bleeding more than one pad an hour call your doctor as well. If you can not get hold of your doctor go to the ER. I am not a doctor or anything, but certainly did talk to enough of them during my miscarriage. 3 out of 4 of them recommended having a natural miscarriage which I did. After my miscarriage lots of women I knew came out of the woodwork and told me they had a miscarriage. I heard some stories of regret (from having D&Cs and having "what ifs") and others just letting me know that they had went on to have healthy children. I found out about one of my aunts who had lost a baby and about 15 ladies I went to church with (out of about 50 women in the church). It is alot more common than we realize!

sorry to hear about your loss, I just had a misscarriage at 12 weeks, the fetus actually stopped living at 8 weeks and we just found out. My OBGYN gave me 3 options, 1 you can have a D&C (dilation and currietage) 2 you can pass the fetus natually, or 3 you can have cytotec inserted vaginally.cytotec is considered a natural form of cleaning out the uterus but more fully then just naturally aborting. I opted for cytotec, it started working really fast. about 1 hr after insertion. lots of pads that is all I have to say, you need lots of pads. there are a lot of clots and tissue that will pass and it feels like a rush coming out. for me personally, the doctors told me that the side effects were cramping and possible diarrhea. neither happened, everthing went fine for 2 days I was passing, then when I thought it had all stopped, I stood up one evening and I started bleeding uncontrollably, they rushed me to OR (operation room) because I lost so much blood I was faint, they ended up doing a D&C anyways afterI opted out of that option. All i have to say is that I was scared that I was going to die. when you choose make sure that you talk to your practitioner about the worse of the side effects not just the mild ones. I am happy to say though, that my husband and I ar ok, and that we are okay about our loss. we understand that it happens even to th best parent(s) and we have a 1 1/2 yr old that we are so blessed to have now, I am just glad to be able to go home everyday and see her. I hope my experience tells you a bit more about cytotec, I just want to emphasis get all the facts about the drug whether it is the oral, rectal, or vaginal insertion.

I know this is an old post. But, I was told today that next Tuesday-the 25th- i am goin to be induced --since i'll be past my due date,if my lil' girl doesnt come by the 24th--, and theyre goin to use Cytotec to start the induction.
I didnt have a good experience with this. This time last year my husband & I were living in Florida and flew home for Thanksgiving/Deer hunting and to tell our families that we were pregnant--our 1st one-- and at the time I was 6 weeks along. We were so excited. Well, long story short, 2 weeks later we drove our 2nd car back to Florida and then the 2nd week of December i went tot he ER cuz i thought i had an ulcer. Well, 7 hours later after sitting in the ER...Im finally told that the baby had died a few weeks before that-when i was about 6 weeks along. I was very uspet. Well, I was referred to an OB--didnt have insurance either-- and he precribed me Cytotec. I followed the directions. Waiting for what i was told would happen, and nothing happened. Just diahrrea and small bleeding, but no clots, nothing else. So, the pills didnt work at all for me.
Since I didnt have insurance i couldnt afford to get a D&C. I saw the OB/GYN again and he said "well just wait til you miscarry naturally". Well, A MONTH LATER i FINALLY miscarry naturally (Jan 16,200 and it was 5 days of labor and lots of blood and contractions. VERY painful.
A hour before I had my OB appointment (i finally had insurance too through the state of FL) the baby passed out along w/ the placenta. At the appointment the ultrasound showed there was still clots and it took a few more days for those to pass.
Well, I am just worried about the Cytotec used to ripen the cervix at the beginning of my induction. ive read articles online (was aware of the Class X..and all of that before I took the pills to make me miscarry the baby) about the Cytotec being used for induction, and the things i've read have scared me!!!
I dont know what to do!!
