re: breastfeeding & cigs.

Sure it's better to breastfeed even if you're a smoker as it's still more natural than formula but.. why subject your child to nicotine intake, besides if pregnancy and breastfeeding isn't enough to make a woman quit .. what does that say about her as a person? I feel bad for a child who grows up with a cloud of cigarette smoke above their head.

and the fact the babies are preemies. I was out of my mind with worry about mine, pumping for him was the only thing i could control or really do to help, i couldn't possibly imagine smoking and having that in the 'liquid gold' that i was trying so hard to produce

just because someone smokes doesn't mean they smoke around their kid!!

My mom smokes, and when I was little she never smoked around me. My father however..he did. There's a picture somewhere where he's holding a cigarette in one hand, and a beer in the other..with me on his lap Lol good dad huh?

Even if they somehow manage to avoid inflicting the fate of a passive smoker on their child, a person who smokes will smell like a smoker, which is gross in itself not to mention once the child is older, it's going to be easier for the child to pick up on the habit because his/her parent is a smoker so there's someone to steal cigs from as well as it's not as tabu as it is for a person coming from a non smoking family.

lol i love how you honestly believe that bullshit. i have MANY friends whos parents smoke and they think its GROSS! people do thier own thing.... And just cause someone smokes, doesnt mean they smell like shit. since this post, i have quit breast feeding (not cause i wanted to smoke, but cause its terribly hard for me on top of having two newborns at home) But yes, i have smoked a cig since i quit BFding, and i thourghly wash my hands for 2 1/2 min up my arms before i hold one of my babies... i just think this is stupid. Also you obviously think that smoking is wrong for a parent because you couldn't even type that post up coherently. I'll discuss what I want, when I want, how I want, where I want to, get over that - k thanks =)

About stopping breastfeeding - too bad for your children.

I believe, unless your child is put into a plastic bubble, they're going to know someone that smokes, and therefore at least try it. Many people try smoking at least once in their lives..not all by any means..and don't like it, and never do it again. You cant shield your child from it, just tell them it's wrong and not to do it, as parents, that's all you can really do.

As for washing your hands for a whole 2.5mins between smoking and touching immuno compromised preemies - you are supposed to wait 1 hour between smoking and handling them. I hope they make it through winter ok, or that you find the willpower to protect them to the best of your abilities.

my babies actually arent pre-mature at all in weight thank you very much. And i dont need information on the decisions i am making with my twins whom are actually doing better than ANY baby ive ever seen, i simply asked questions about smokign while breastfeeding which i never did. But now i have stopped breast feeding and turned to formula (omg, i know im satan now to all of the formula descriminators, LOL) But shit... lets grow up a little more now than to hate on some girl for just asking information. =) haha damn

Nobody was rude to you, you're the one who asked for information and then got overly defensive with your 'for your information I washed my hands for 2 and a half minutes' approach - who cares how long you wash your hands for, smoking is still wrong. 'but shit, let's grow up a little' - sure, but you're the only one using words such as 'shit' and then you get all 'but I was only asking for advice'.

You got advice, it was constructive and helpful, but it's a silly notion to expect people to support you while you make the decision to smoke.

Iassumed they were preemies given that you posted in the preemie forum. Weight has little to do with it, it's about their immune system, with winter/RSV and flu season i'd just want to do my best to protect them.
