Doctor who Linked MMR Vaccine to Autism being Charged

posted 23rd Jul '07
I just thought I would share this with parents who are choosing not to vaccinate their babies on the normal schedule due to the autism risk.... This study is now being proven to have been compromised by unethical actions of the doctor who published his results and caused the nationwide concern and drop in vaccination rates....

Doctor who raised vaccine-autism alarm faces hearing

LONDON (Reuters) - The British doctor who sparked a health scare by suggesting a childhood vaccine against measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) is linked to autism faces a hearing on Monday into charges of professional misconduct during his research.

The General Medical Council hearing, expected to last 15 weeks, centers on research published in The Lancet medical journal in 1998 in which Andrew Wakefield and colleagues posited a link between the MMR vaccine and autism.

The claim led to fierce worldwide debate among researchers and caused a decline in MMR vaccinations that health experts in the United Kingdom say has not yet recovered to the level seen before Wakefield's study.

Scientific evidence suggests that vaccines are not linked to autism but a vocal group of people remain unconvinced.

Vaccine experts say parents often link vaccines with their children's symptoms because getting a shot can be upsetting, and children are vaccinated at an age when autism and related disorders are often first diagnosed.

The council will not look into the scientific claims but whether Wakefield and two colleagues — John Walker-Smith and Simon Murch — violated a number of ethical practices during the study involving young children.

"The panel will inquire into allegations of serious professional misconduct by Dr. Wakefield, Professor Walker-Smith and Professor Murch, in relation to the conduct of a research study involving young children from 1996-1998," the group said.

The council regulates doctors in Britain and could bar the three from practice. It said it would also look into charges Wakefield was involved in advising solicitors representing children claiming to have suffered harm due to the MMR vaccine.

Wakefield also faces a charge that he acted unethically by taking blood from children at a birthday party after offering them money and without proper ethical approval.

During the time of the study the three were employed at the Royal Free Hospital in London. Wakefield now works in the United States and said in a recent interview with the Observer newspaper he plans to defend himself vigorously.

"My concern is that it's biologically plausible that the MMR vaccine causes or contributes to the disease in many children, and that nothing in the science so far dissuades me from the continued need to pursue that question," Wakefield said.

Before Wakefield's study, more than 90 percent of children in the United Kingdom received the vaccination, according to government figures. After his warning that figure fell to around 80 percent before rising to 85 percent in 2007.

The World Health Organisation target is 95 percent, a level that protects the wider population from potential outbreaks and epidemics.

I thought so too - I got it in my BabyCenter online bulletin that I get weekly in my email..
I just thought that I would share because I have seen a lot of discussions on here about vaccinations and the main reason girls on here are saying they won't vaccinate is this case..

Yep the people that speak out against vaccines always end up getting charged for something in the end, they will find something to charge them on because they don't want us to know the truth. We have been indoctrinated to vaccinate, and that is what they want. They don't want us to think for ourselves.

My cousin got autisic from his vaccinations, and they can prove it, so I don't care what any government tries to propogate saying they don't cause that.

It's a moral issue for me too. They make vaccines with aborted fetal tissue. Not only does the DNA from that aborted fetal tissue get into your baby, but just the fact that I am totally against abortion for any reason whatsoever stops me from vaccinating.

You've got to be joking me. Yes, the government is going to make up false accusations and charge innocent people just so you will vaccinate your child!

How exactly can you prove that he became autistic from the vaccine?

Just FYI - It was also the doctors themselves who published the study that admitted SEVERAL times, in SEVERAL different articles that the link they were claiming existed, Did NOT.
Here's the article for you.

Retracted report claiming association with autism and bowel disease

Main article: The MMR controversy

In the UK, the vaccine was the subject of controversy despite the 1998 paper by Andrew Wakefield et al reporting a study of 12 children who had autism and bowel disease with onset after MMR[20] concluding that there was no proof of "an association between MMR vaccine and the syndrome described".[21] Numerous peer-reviewed studies have also since failed to show any correlation.

Wakefield nevertheless suggested during a 1998 press conference that giving children the vaccines in three separate doses would be safer than a single jab. This suggestion was again not supported by the paper, his 12 co-authors nor by any scientific evidence[20] and has been heavily criticized, both on scientific grounds and for triggering a decline in vaccination rates.[22] In fact, it is widely believed that using separate, single vaccines in place of MMR puts children at increased risk since the combined vaccine reduces the risk of them catching the diseases while they are waiting for full immunisation cover.[21][23]

In 2001, Berelowitz, one of the co-authors of the paper, said "I am certainly not aware of any convincing evidence for the hypothesis of a link between MMR and autism".[21] Subsequently, in 2004, the intepretation section of the study was formally retracted by ten of Wakefield's twelve co-authors, including Berelowitz.[24] The retraction followed an investigation by The Sunday Times.[25] The Centers for Disease Control,[26] the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences,[27] and the U.K. National Health Service[28] have all concluded that there is no evidence of a link between the MMR vaccine and autism.

In July 2007 Dr Andrew Wakefield and colleagues Professor John Walker-Smith, and Professor Simon Murch faced charges of serious professional misconduct at the General Medical Council. It is alleged that the trio acted unethically in preparing the research into safety of the MMR vaccine.[29]

They recanted their own story and then were charged. But I'm sure you're going to say that the government FORCED them to retract the study, right?

yeah i was going to ask that too...
whatever.
I work in the medical field and have never heard that...
now I know they can use aborted fetal tissue for thier studies...like the controversial stem cell research...but it isn't used in vaccines.

EDIT....in stem cell research they do have a shot for Parkinson's disease that is in testing and some patients have gotten the shot..I think Christopher Reeves was one of the studied on patients....but that is for parylitic patients and parkinson's disease...it's controversial....AND is not in regular vaccinations.

BUT guys, the problem with autism is as the article stated...the timing is just really bad.....MOST autism is diagnosed after a certain age....as most kids with autism develop normally..then it suddenly stops and goes backwards.
it might not have anything to do with the vaccine...but since the vaccine is on a schedule...it happens around that time. does that make sense?
I consider myself a specialist in Autism...so it is my theories....but the link never made sense to me.

I agree with you. It is absurd to think that our country, which is at war and concerned with other things, is conspiring to keep everyone vaccinated and blind. Completely paranoid! This isnt old Russia. (haha)
And JKA, when did "thinking for yourself" mean putting your kids at risk to contract deadly diseases?
Who said and how can you prove that vaccines contain fetal tissue? You know what? Because of all this MMR vaccine link to autism crap, my friend almost had an abortion, because she got the MMR vaccine not knowing she was pregnant. After reading up on the complications that could arise, her mind was made up to abort. I dont see how supporting the people who try to scare others from protecting themselves and their families and refusing the vaccine yourself makes you more pro life than others.
Dont bother posting any links, I have seen some of the "references" that you gave one time, and they were all cheap sources.
Anyway...yes, having your kids vaccinated IS a moral issue. It makes you think...."is my baby's health any more important than my own beliefs?"

to both of you
please read the whole article the op posted

and just in bold in case you miss it........again

Vaccine experts say parents often link vaccines with their children's symptoms because getting a shot can be upsetting, and children are vaccinated at an age when autism and related disorders are often first diagnosed.

............never throughout the history have people lived longer, and healthier lives........
