My Paraguard (almost) Horror Story

I had my Paraguard IUD placed in September of 08, and really didn't have a lot of problems with it aside from having to have the strings shortened after they tried to give Anthony a Prince Albert . The last few months, however, I began having ridiculously heavy periods, and I mean ridiculous. I was having to change a super plus tampon every 1.5 to 2 hours. This was happening for about 3 days out of my 5 day period. Although I knew this wasn't my normal 'flow' I didn't think there was cause for concern. ...
That is until last week, when I began having really sharp, unexplainable cramps. I went through all of the reasons in my head, and the IUD came to mind, so I decided to check the placement to see if I could feel the strings. As I checked, I felt nothing.
I went to my doctor yesterday, and they did an exam and confirmed that they also could not feel them. So, we did an ultrasound and they found that it was embedded into my uterus!!!! I had to be knocked out while the shoved the forceps into my uterus to extract it.


Although I knew that this was a risk, I never imagined it happening to me. Thank goodness we found it before it caused any real damage, and the only thing I have wrong is some pain and bleeding now.  I just wanted to share this story for anyone who is considering getting one. This doesn't happen to everyone, but just know that it could, and listen to your body to be aware of the signs.

that happened to my one friend, but she wasn't as lucky as you...it punctured through her uterus and now they say she may not be able to have children. (it should be noted that she never wanted children so being unable to have them doesn't bother her)

OH no! That is crazy.
I knew the thought of an IUD freaked me out for a reason.
I just am not comfortable with a foreign object semi-permanently placed in my uterus.

I heard so many horror stories about the old IUDs that I will never get them. Everybody says the ones they've made in the past few years are way better, but I don't trust them. Too scary for me.

me too!! I just don't think that I was the best at remembering to take it then!!

Well shit i got the paraguard today, now im worried. So far ive had small cramps and mild spotting, but crap i hope nothings bad happens with my IUD! Im glad your okay mama!
