question about breastfeeding...again

posted 28th Sep
so i got a brest pump and started pumping for almost a week now, and i can get like 3oz from one and only half an oz from the other. whats wrong? i wonder if my milks dryin up. but there is milk still coming out of it. my son is getting enough im sure cause he put on like 10oz a week. is this normal? its like this one side is shrinking. my mom says to let him nurse more on that side and i do but it hurts my whole breast when he does, like way back to my arm pit. what should i do cause i dont wanna stop breastfeeding?

Might be a clogged duct or mastitis.....try massaging that area while you pump.....pumping is the best thing (or baby nursing) for a clogged duct....mastitis I'm not sure about, I think you have to get an antibiotic.

A pump is not a good indicator of how much milk you are producing. So, your supply is probably fine.

Do you have a clogged duct? That could be why it hurts when he nurses. Continue to nurse him on that side and massage your breast while he does it.

Mine did that too. I read it's normal and you just have to pump more to up your supply. Or try Fenugreek, you can get it at GNC for like 12 bucks. 3 pills 3 times a day and it works wonders. It ups your supply!

You are not drying up. Your son is better then a breast pump. He can get more out. lol. As long as hes gaining weight hes perfectly fine. He probably just eats most of the milk.

as far as the difference in oz in each breast , TOTALLY normal. some women also say , including myself, that even before pregnancies, their breasts were different in size, this, too is normal. size has nothing to do with how much milk you produce, just how some women are. you can also try nursing your LO on that side more often to try and increase that side, this may help

the hurting in your arm pit may be mastitis or a clogged duct. warm compresses and massages help.

whatever happens, don't give up! there are always bumps in the road, but promise you, those will go away and you will continue to love BFing

fenugreek didn't up my supply it had the adverse affect, actually. it's not regulated by the FDA for BFing mothers and certain ingrediants like sage can also cause decrease in milk supply, just a forewarning. however, it has worked for the majority of mamas.

true. and as long as he has enough wet diapers a day you are fine. it is VERY rare that your supply dries up if you are putting babes at breast at every feeding and aren't supplimenting.

I believe it is only around 3-5% of women who truly have supply issues, so don't worry!

ahhhhhhh ..if only we all felt like taking the easy way out, well not even easy, bc when baby and you get familiar with bfing , it is sooo convenient, and better for babes! dble whamy!
it's good to feed on demand. he'll let you know when he's hungry. every baby is different on how much and how often they eat. emma eats every 2 to 3 hours sometimes, but wants to nurse more frequently other times. the good thing is, as time goes by, they learn how to eat more efficiently, emptying you out in 5-10 min's. Em is done in 5 min's now if she isn't comfort nursing. it only gets easier, trust me.
