can I do it?

posted 26th Sep
Has anyone started a sippy with their 4 month old?

I saw a playtex sippy at Walmart that starts at 4 months, so I'm curious. How did you go about introducing them to it? And when were they completely done with the bottle?

Thanks ladies!

Emma can barely hold her bottle. Maybe bc she is bf, but idk if they can use it that young.

I don't really see how that would work, my son is just now starting to hold rattles and stuff. I don't think he could hold a cup with liquid in it just yet. You usually introduce them at 6+ months.

you can but they really dont need anything but b/m or formula until 6 months. We started the sippy at 6 months and that worked out well for us

Yep, it can be done. My six month old has had a sippy of watered down juice twice. She seems to understand the concept pretty well of sucking to get the stuff out. But she still prefers boobies.

Lex can hold her bottle if its the small one...and I'll put a finger on each side like a sippy handle, and she will hold onto them and put the bottle in her mouth...so I'm not sure how she would do with a real one

my son is just learning to put EVERYTHING in his mouth because he's teething, so I'm going to buy him a sippy with a really soft nozzle and try him out on it in a couple of weeks when he hits 4 months. However, I am going to talk to my doc about it first because i've heard its easier to transition if you give them a bottle/boob with milk and a sippy with other drinks in it (water, juice, etc) so that they don't associate the sippy with formula/breastmilk because it can make weaning harder.

Even though I want to introduce the sippy soon, I won't give it to him regularly until he's 6 months. And I plan to continue breastfeeding as often as he'll take it until he's a year and then night-only feedings as long as I can because we'll be TTC when he's a year (some people lose their milk, some dont...if I don't I'll ocassionally BF him up til he's like 2 i think)

Agreed. I think I'm gonna get one with the soft nipple and just give it to her to see what she does. I wont give her water or anything though, til she's 6 months. So I guess we cant really start for a few months

i live in the desert (like the FOR REAL desert) so my doc said i can either water down BM or give him water if I'm going outside with him because he'll need lots of water to stay hydrated. He said not to do it unless I'm taking him outdoors and he'll be hot/sweaty. It is STILL over 95 here during the day, so I've given him 1-2 oz of water in a bottle once or twice to cool him off and hydrate him.

But yeah, other than extreme circumstances, I will not give him ANYTHING but breastmilk (if its really warm, he won't drink the breastmilk unless its icy cold so I'll give him an ounce or two of water while I pump and stick it in the freezer to chill so he'll drink it)

Mandy I havent seen those Im gonna look next time I go to the store. I didnt give my older two sippies until they were about 10 months old to try and get them ready to get off the bottle. I gave them the option of either one {Id leave them both out and see which they took} and slowly stopped putting the bottle as much. I guess its something new cause I never saw sippies for that young in 2004 and 2006
