I didnt breastfeed long...but i'll try to help.   5 minutes is not really long enough of a feeding for him to get full. Try undressing him, messing with his feet...anything to keep him awake to eat. If you are producing milk, i'd pump it and save it. That way, if you need it, you have that milk. Plus, breast-milk runs on a supply and demand system. the more you pump, the more you produce. *i believe*

Don't pump: it can lead to oversupply and a foremilk/ hindmilk imbalance. While 5 mins isn't really long enough there's not much you can do if he's refusing the boob. When he falls asleep on the boob you can tap his feet, rub his temple and blow in his face to get him to suckle/ latch on for longer.

Just nurse on demand, there is no need to pump as long as you're doing that. Your breasts will eventually get the right amount of milk, and will no longer be engorged. It is very rare to have supply issues, if you're not supplementing with formula or exclusively pumping.

I was told by my LC if you are engorged to pump it empty. I never had an over supply, and actually my milk dried up by 5 months.

5 minutes isn't long enough. If he falls asleep, try to wake him up. There were times I would have to strip Jack down to get him to wake up. I also used to rub his cheek to wake him up

Engorgement can also lead to latching trouble.

Hand expressing will usually do the job to solve the latch issues caused by engorgement. That is what my LC told me to do. She said not to pump, it will only continue to tell my breasts to produce that much milk & like another poster said it can cause a foremilk/hindmilk imbalance.

I try to keep him awake but he is so tired the nurse said thats because he was early and they tend not to feed as well. When he's eating i hear him swallowing and im starting to try to wake him often to try offering it to him just to see if he will take but he always falls asleep and the nurse was giving him pumped milk through a bottle but I dont want him to start wanting the bottle over breast and hes only three days old

As long as he's having wet and dirty diapers, you have absolutely nothing to worry about & no reason to offer a bottle if you don't want to.

You can just keep trying to offer to nurse him when he's up, and try to keep him awake. If you can't, no big deal. He'll get what he needs.

I had to see my LC at 4 days PP, and she told me opposite- she told me to pump if it was engorged

That's funny. I guess it's just like a regular doctor, go to two different doctors for the same type of problem and you'll more then likely get two different answers.

My mom's an LC and she told me and my sisters opposite. Guess they all have their own opinions LOL
