The long road

Hey all. I am so sorry that I haven't really haven't been able to keep up with updates. Bryan Hunter came home from the hospital on 8-30-09. We were told that he would be fine. He was still having spells( destats of his pulse ox. levels) but they passed him through his 5 day spell watch anyway. He came home on Reglan. On 9-1-09 he took an apnea episode and turned completely blue and wasn't breathing at alll. Luckily I had been well trained at NICU and he revived with a vigurous stimulation (sternum rub). He was rushed to the children't hospital. He had 3 more episodes of apnea and continuous dtats and some brady cardia (drops in his heart rate). He was there til 9-13-09. For some reason they realeased him when he was having spells up until the night before he was released with his pulse ox. dipping into the 60s. (ahhhhhhhh grrrrrrrrrrrrr blahhhhhh). We fought to have him stay. They said if we didn't show up to pick him up it would be considered abandonment (wtf. but this isn't considered child endangerment???). He came home and continued having episodes where he would have trouble remembering to breathe and turning duskt. Finally, yesterday, we had our first appointment with the neonatal follow-up clinic and the wonderful dr. there (God Bless Dr. Vohr) sent us home with an order for oxygen and a pulse ox. monitor. Wooohooooo!!! Now we can finally take care of our children the way we were trained to. Aryanne is still in the NICU. She had spells 3 weeks straight at least once a day. Blahhhh. Her pulse ox. was dipping down into the 30s on and off during that time. It actually reached 13 and they finally put her back on caffenine. So far so good. She is on relgan and zantac as well. She will be coming home on a monitor once she passes her 5 day spell watch. We are on day 3 out of 5. Wish her luck xoxoxoxoxo

wow you are a really tough mama! I know how hard the NICU stay can be but your children are fighters and so are you. GOOD JOB!!! Keep doing good and keep fighting for those babies

It wasn't the hospital it was our stupid peditrician. Needless to say he has been replaced!!!! He was outstanding with our older (full term) kids, but doesn't seem to know smurf about preemies.

I agree with Stephanie. Find a better hospital. Glad to here that after all this you'll be able to have both of them home. Good luck momma

i'm sorry things seem to keep getting worse. Atleast 2 of them are at home and hopefully things will start looking better in the next few weeks. My cousin had to be on a heart monitor and put on a breathing machine when he was able to come home, it took us 5 tries to find a decent dr. for him to have that could actually handle taking care of him and knew what to do as well. I'll try to get on here again to see your updates things here are just getting difficult right now with this pregnancy, their taking the baby here soon and it looks like we'll be staying there for a good month atleast.

I am sorry you are going thru that. I went thru the same thing, but my pedi was wonderful. When Andrew hit his term date the doctor was concerned. He figured he would grow out of it because he figure it was due to being a preemie. He was puton a heart monitor after he was release from NICU because he has a very scary epidoses where he aspirated and we had to do CPR on him. Sorry so long ofa story. My son ended having surgery at 2 months because reflux was causing his destate and apnea spells. I hope you LOs get better soon and get over the bradies and apneas spells. If you need to talk you can PM any time. The first year of Andrew's life was pretty rough due to his reflux problems.

Hey sweetie! Sorry to hear about the LO's :O( I'm keeping you guys in my prayers .. you did a good thing by replacing the pediatrician .. he doesn't sound like he knew what he was doing! Glad to hear they will both be home :O) Good luck! xoxo

I am in awe and completely disgusted with medical 'progessionals' who would send a desating baby home with no monitors or oxygen. How effing ridiculous. I would strongly consider filing suit againt any and every person who was behind that decision. It's reckless. Not every mother is capable of watching their baby essentially suffocate and reviving them. If you hadn't been able to, that doctor would have the death of your son on his hands. That should not be taken lightly.

I'm glad your little guy got the help he needed. Hopefully his sister can join him at home soon. Hugs mama.

I think you just try to keep things recorded as much as you can or maybe have a family member write things they said/did down on a calender for you so maybe when this is all over and the babies are safe at home you can talk to someone about making a case..if you wanted.
