Babies on Oxygen

posted 18th Sep
Just wondering how many other mommies out there have a baby at home on oxygen, or HAD a baby on oxygen who is now breathing room air!

And if they are off, how long were they on the oxygen and how many liters were they on (0.1, 0.25, 0.50)

was he a preemie? Why is he on oxygen?

Does he constantly pull at his cannula too? My daughters ALWAYS grabbing at it and then she cries. I dont know what to do to make it more comfortable for her. She been on hers since she got off her ventilator around mid-june

If your child is home on oxygen, they just kind of have to get used to it. Its like not liking to wearing glassesor having hair in their eyes. Its part of life. At this age there isn't much you can do except redirect.

I brought my LG home on O2. He came home at 4 1/2 months on .1 liters and .125 for feeds. Hedidnt tolerate being weaned very well so we went slowly. He didnt come off the O2 completely until 15 months. We finally got rid of the apnea and pulse ox at 21 months. He is now almost 27 months and is doing great. We still do daily nebs of Pulmicort and useXopenex as needed.

The pulmonologist says we are looking at atleast a year with our daughter on her oxygen. Did you come across any problems or was it more difficult when your son started walking and crawling? I know I am several months off from that but since learning that we are going to beon O2 for awhile I started thinking about how its going to be as she getsolder. And since he was on 0.1, how did they wein him since thats the lowest liter flow?

It was a little more difficult when he started crawling. He would get more tangled in the cords. We just used longer tubing and fed the tubes through the back of his shirts. I got the idea from another parent and it did help. He didnt start crawling until he was a yr and it was just army crawling he didnt really crawl until 14 months and he was still pretty slow. So it was sad that he was delayed but we never had to worry about him being very mobile while still on O2. How old is your LO? How early? How long was she on a vent?
At our NICU they had to be on .2 liters or less and stable to be discharged. ( I am sure excpetions were madein special circumstances)He came home on .1 liters and we did have to turn it up for feeds and later on for PT. Our tanks went all the way down to .025 liters. Which is just a wiff of O2. He had been down to as low as .075 while still in the NICU but always ended up having his requirements go back up. We were told he would probably only need it for about 6 months. He just couldnt let the O2 go his Pulm said some babies are like that. In the beginning when we began room air trials he would desat within 1-2 minutes. Later on he was able to go 20 minutes and so on. He was never on .025 but he did have to stay at .075 for the last couple of months before he was able to come off. So I guess it was more the length of time he could go with out O2 that we kept increasing vs decreasing his O2 amounts.
