Baby Eats to Much

posted 7th Dec '06
Well My baby is now just about 3wks old, and he sure likes to eat. It is hard to feed him every hour cause that just leave me feeling exhausted. Is it okay to do this? I mean the only thing that gets him to stop crying is the breast milk; yeah the pacifier works for a little while, but eventually he figuers out that he isn't getting the milk.

Well I know he is strong and healthy, that is the good news: grown one pound since his delivery on Nov. 18th. Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions about how to get the baby to relax, or a sure fire way to check if he is really hungry.

Check out   KAI for all the news OR check out   The Baby Feed

Thanks to all.

Sincerely,

Aya. Kai. & Anthony

Well, a lactation consultant I spoke with one time told me that babies cannot overeat.. that they will only eat when hungry. So, chances are if your baby boy is eating the breastmilk, and not spitting it all back up or anything, he's actually hungry.

My son is only a month old, and going through a growth spurt right now, so he's eating every hour, as well. Maybe that's the case with yours?

Well, good luck! Hope that helped.

I would try adding a lil bit of rice cereal in his formula bottles...My mom told me too do it with my daughter at two weeks old but i started doing it when she was 2 in a half months because she was always wanting to eat...a lot of people start to do that with their babys...my nephew mother she did it with him when he was about 3 weeks but it all depends on how u feel about starting your infant with cereal and stuff..

maybe try pumping the milk for awhile, his mouth may not be strong enough to get the amount he needs or you may not be producing enough milk.

He might not be getting enough to eat, you might try interspersing formula with breast milk.

My daughter did that for awhile and my friend told me to put her on a feeding schedule for awhile. I did and now she only wants to eat every two or three hours. I wasn't getting the sleep I needed when she was demanding food every hour, I was rude to my husband, I yelled at the baby  , I felt like a cow all the time and I now have bags under my eyes from it. And I'm only 19. Now all is some better. Gotta run

Good Luck!!!

P.S. Raen our babies are 1 day apart that is soooooooo cool!!

Babies are supposed to eat 8-12 times a day, so keeping that in mind, your baby is probably eating like he should. I know it's a pain to feed every hour, and you don't get much sleep because of it, but it gets better. If you're breastfeeding, they say that you should breastfeed "on demand" so that would be whenever your baby gives the feeding cues. Just know that it's not like this forever. It does get better, and they do start eating bigger quantities less frequently as they get older. As someone said, it could be an issue with milk production, so try pumping for 15 mins on both sides and see what you get. But if you still have questions or worry, ask your pediatrician. I wouldn't start cereal or formula until you've asked the doctor, though.

I know how you feel on feeding all the time and my dr told me that to feed on both breast and then a bottle to top the baby off. Also it may be the same problem I had with my baby Anthony, your baby may not be getting the hine milk the fatty part of it that fills them up.Anthony feel asleep while nursing and didn't get that part he only go the volume part of it.So I hope this help you and anyone else who may need some help in this subject.

He sounds normal for a breastfed baby. Usually a baby feeds every 1-2 hours. Try expressing milk and having Daddy feed the baby while you catch up on sleep. Do you own the book The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding? It will answer a lot of your questions. Also this link should help you out a bit, http://pediatrics.about.com/od/breastfeedingtips/

I would say that giving a baby cereal when they are under 5 months is not a good idea and it is also not a good idea to give cereal in a bottle it is better off trying to feed the baby by spoon, I know it may be a bit messy but it teaches the child how to eat off a spoon. Just ask a WIC specialist because thats where I was taught this information.

My son started eating 8oz at two week's every 2 hour's. He is now 3 1/2 and almost 4 feet tall. Not sure if his eating has anything to do with his height though.

I was told giving your baby cereal too early can lead to weight problems early in life and for this we all need to be careful. This world has too much in the ways of weight problem and I am one of them. Therefore I am being more careful so Anthony doesn't have any more problems then he needs to have.
