son born at 34 weeks....need advice and support

posted 12th Sep
SO my son was born this last sunday and was 34 weeks. he was on a breathing machine for a few hours, then breathing on his own. He was being fed IV fluids and put on a feeding tube bc he wont suck the bottle yet. He was moved out of the incubator last night to an open air crib, all iv's removed and only had the tube in still. this morning i went back to see him, and he was put back in the incubator bc he couldnt keep his body temp up where they wanted. i was also told they are going to monitor his head growth bc it looks like his head is still a little long.....so they want to watch it....im feeling so sad and discouraged, i just need to hear some other folks thats been through this.

My daughter was born at 29 weeks & the same thing happened to us, they kept moving her back & fourth for the incubater to the crib.
But don't worry it's for the best & i know it's hard to get through it but he will be home soon. Good luck hun!

just stay calm and relax. what hospital are you at? babies at 34 weeks have very high chances of coming through with few problems later in life. he is fighting hard and needs you to be strong around him. i didnt wind up having primies but i had spent alot of time reading into it because of my risk. good luck for you and him

I am so sorry you are feeling so sad and discouranged. I haven't had a preemie baby (or any babies, yet) but I was born at 34 weeks.... and I think I turned out OK! Your little guy will be just fine.

I had a 32 weeker and we spent 28 days in the NICU. He only weighed 2lbs 14oz at birth. The smaller the baby...the harder it is for them to regulate and maintain their own body temp. The more weight he gains the quicker he'll get put in an open air crib. My son wasn't moved to a crib until a week before he was discharged. But keep your head up mama....this time will pass and before you know it your lil monkey will be a year old just like mine and this time in the NICU will be a distant memory~

We just got our son home for good about 2 1/2 weeks ago. He was born at 35 weeks gestation and was in the hospital as well for his lung development. They would take him off the oxygen and put him back on they had to give him a cathater in his arm for his fluids. It was just a really stressful time for us cause there was always something new going on with him. But I totally understand what your going through. Feel free to PM me anytime if you wanna talk or have questions.

I know exacly what your going tru mama!! My son was born at 34 weeks too!! He didn't have trouble breathing but he did have trouble with feeding.. He strugled with weight lost for the first week and half! He was born at 3 14 and got down to 2 10 I think.. But after the switch of sucking turned on he went up up up.. We left the NICU after 19 long days!! They will be very long days but just think its for your little one best!! And he needs you to be strong!! I hope everything turns out great keep us updated mama!! FEel free to PM me if you ever need anyone to talk to or just have a well known preemie question.. Lol.. Not that I know much but I'm getting there..

i understand how you may feel my son was born 31 weeks, and he had similar problems to. but just keep faith and pray, and make sure you visit him often and talk to him. let him hear your voice. let him know that your there for him. he'll pull through. just stay positive
