How long after your water breaks 'should' baby be born?

posted 11th Sep '09
So just like the topic says......

If your water breaks on your own, or it's broken for you .... how long do you have to safely deliver your baby? What is too long? and why? Anyone in the know?

I'm also not talking about a small leak in the bag, but full out broken! lol

It depends on when it breaks in pregnancy and if you are in a hospital setting. Or if there are any other problems. Generally i think its supposed to be 24hrs but it really depends on the circumstances.

I think 24 hours. Otherwise you can have the risk of infection .
Unless you tested positive for Group B Strep. Then they want you to have the baby sooner..... (I believe)

24 hours. Anything over that and you risk infection.

it's not too long becasue since your water is the baby's amniotic flluid, it's crucial to his/her life. watiting too long will kill the baby. its best to get to a hospital and if you are in the hospital, they should monitor the baby's heartrate in case she/he's not coming and they need to preform an emergency c section

actually...they probably would stall you long enough to get an IV of antibiotics in. because if you don't get it, the baby could be very sick after its born.

dr's want the baby out within 24 hours to prevent infection, but in some cases they will try to keep the baby in longer as long as the fuild isn't two low (but those are extrem premiee cases)

Ok, this is why I asked - I only heard after the fact that it was 24 hours. My water broke for my daughter at 7am on a Friday morning, and she wasn't born until 1am on Sunday. I was 36 weeks. I got to the hospital around 9am and they kept me there the whole time, but I wasn't progressing enough, as she couldn't fit through my pelvis eventhough she was small. So that's 42 hours!

they probably started I V anitbiotics at some piont, but being 36 weeks no they wouldn't want to rush as long as she was doing ok

my Dr said they had to have ny son within 18 hours when my water broke...I'm sure they put antibiotics in the Iv because you were only 36 weeks and they wanted to wait...
