Cereal to help gain weight?

posted 10th Sep
my 33 weeker is now 3 months old and is having a lot of trouble gaining weight...he is still noly 6lbs 14oz....he has had every test in the book and no doctor or specialist can figure out why he isnt gaining.
I saw on a forum of the Pampers website, where Moms said they were adding 1 tablespoon of rice cereal to 4oz of formula and their babies gained good weight and stopped spitting up.
I wasnt sure if that was okay to try for my son since he is a preemie. Has anyone heard of this? Is it okay? His pedi's are idiots and I am don't want their opinion anymore. (They said my baby looked like he just came from a concentration camp today!)
Please help ladies!

i wouldn't. the recommended age to start introducing cereal is at least 4 months. but since your son is a preemie, he needs to be at least 5. or i would suggest talking to your pedi about it. he/she could tell you whether or not it would be safe to try. but i wouldn't unless told so by a dr.

ETA: shit i just saw what your pedi said! fuck them moma!!! find someone else!

Go get him a new Pedi.,
I wouldnt try the cereal until you get a professional opinion, and one that you can trust, especially with a preemie. Their little tummies are so sensitive because of development

my son has reflux. his pedi was having us put 1 TSP of rice cereal per 1 OUNCE of formula...[i disagreed with that method- i didnt want him having cereal from a bottle] but i would still check with your pedi before giving any cereal at this age.

Read that before you add anything to his bottle, hun.

Find a reliable pediatrician, and ask what you can do to help him.

Definitely get a new pedi, you NEVER need to put up with shit like that.

There's a special formula for preemies that helps them gain weight fast, is he on that already?

The other thing that's really scary is that it's a choking hazard to put cereal in the bottle, and with him being a preemie, he might even have a harder time. I would definitely find a new doctor. Maybe he needs a different kind of formula or something?

Dang my 28 weeker was on that but only 24 cals and gained weight so well we just have him on regular neosure without any added calories. I have heard about the cereal thing though, I was told that with premies they reccommend it sometimes if they have trouble gaining weight, but I think its defintely something to talk with a doctorabout and it wouldnt hurt to get a couple doctors opinions on it just in case.

Ok good, You might be able to give cereal it isn't usually a good option to start early but when a child is failing to thrive sometimes cereal or food can be started to help them. Before you start anything find a new pedi and discuss your concerns with them.
