Mommies with young school age kids. (like 1st grade)

My stubborn child is in first grade. He acts just like his father! I was wondering what your strategy is to keep homework feel not so much like work. Example, he had to write 10 spelling words 3x's each. It took him like 30 minutes! He HATES homework. And I need to keep him focused on what he is doing, to learn his stuff. We do work at the kitchen table, and daddy and his little brother and sister go to the other room on the other side of the house. Any suggestions??? Thans...much appreciated

Would he do better with daddy? or make it a game. Whoever can write them three times the neatest first wins?

his 'maw-maw' (my mom) told him if he does it all week w/o too much fuss he gets a dollar. It works a little...but he still doesn't want to sit still or anything. Ieven let him have a little bit of time after school to play b/c he's had to sit all day.

Mine gets a reward if she doesnt give me a hard time and is good all day and I take something she likes to do if she doesnt do what needs to be done. I also only give her 3 strikes with doing it right after the 3rd strike, she is not allowed to play with her cousins that live above or below me for the day.

Home work even when i was young was a mommy 'chore'....maybe we'll have to try daddy doing it. But I'd have to sit with him too, just b/c my husband doesn't know how to do homework. Like...he doesn't know all that our son knows. Ex: i know that he can sound out words, and my husband might just read them to him. But we'll have to see how well he does for daddy.

EDIT: he know what our son knows...as far as education. (of course)But he doesn't know what all our son can do.

My six yr old nephew has severe ADHD he is on meds and all but he will sit at the table and do his homework with me but will give his mother the hardest time in the world. He knows I'm no frills but I'll make it fun. I don't give him any attention when he's not doing it I just tell him we're not getting up until it's done, and he knows I'm not kidding. It works for him dunno about your son.

I raised my nephew until about 2 years ago (he's in 4th grade now)
We had a HUGE problem getting him to do his homework, we would not let him do ANYTHING until it was done, he was allowed to have a snack after school & then it was work time, if he put up a fuss, we took away his game/tv & being able to go play w/ friends in the neighborhood..... he was also rewarded w/ stickers each week, if he completed his homework & didn't fight us on it, he would earn a sticker each day, if he didn't want to do it, we took a sticker away, if he got (i think it was 4 out of 5 stickers) he would get a special treat (a soda, candy bar, something i don't usually let them have)
the sticker chart, along w/ taking the things he liked most away (game system) it worked....... and he was old enough to understand the whole concept which made it even better for him.

I made him a chart w/ wax paper & a permanant marker (cause i'm cheap) but it worked grreat for peeling & un-peeling stickers & i had a small piece of wax paper i put the ones we took away on, that he could earn back.......

idk.... just thought i'd throw it out there...

my husband & i had to switch off, because we would get so frustrated w/ my nephew.......

how about a big chart to mark off what homework he does on what days, and once he gets so many assignments done or has a whole week without a problem .. he gets some kind of reward. that way he can see how much progess he's making and what he's working towards.

My daughter has ADHD and it actually works wonders to have music on. her doctor recommended it.If it is a CD then there are no commercials, if its music they know they dont need to pay close attention and will just hear it in the background. No TV on in the room cause they will look but with music there is nothing to "watch" so they watch the paper.

it makes sense!! it just didn't work for my nephew, but i don't know what's wrong w/ him..... he has something though, cause he's a little slow & has a very hard time staying on task or finishing anything......
i'll keep that in mind though when it comes time to do homework w/ my son..... i'm wondering how he'll do with that.....
