Early Intervention Chat thread

posted 3rd Sep
Eh why not another chat thread...

(moved here from Teen Parenting oops)

Just looking for Mamas who are going through the same things as me... to chat share stories and see what's working with your LO..

Most intrested in toddlers who are in Speech therapy, Occupational therapy so SPD, and other early intervention programs...

My son is Jamil he is going to be 2 on Sunday, he is in Speech, OT, Music Therapy, and gets 6 hours a week of EI, we will also be participating in a Play Steps Study and were waiting to see what group he will be in, (Either a control group, where they do nothing for you, OR a Treatment group where they do 12 weeks of Parent training followed by 20 hours a week of Home therapy.)

Feel free to introduce yourself, your LO, and maybe what there IFSP Goals are.. (Were waiting for new goals for this quarter)

That's amazing of you to do! It will help so much and faster since he is so little, Jamil started Speech at 17 months (Qualified at 16, but it took a while, we actually got the evaluations set up at 15 months) he also started music therapy at 17 months too, and that was so fabulous for him, he learned more words in speech than he did from speech at first, and once they started doing oral motor with him his language really took off.

I looked into private pay to be able to get my son a second hour a week and it was 100 per session!

"I'm glad to see someone in the same boat as me. My son turned 2 a little over a month ago and he's been in early intervention since february. He's getting speech therapy and special ed 4x a week. They just did his review and he's still in the 1% tile which means he hasnt made any progress, in fact he's lower than before because now he's older and should be doing more than before and he's not. They have been talking about adding him some type of school a few days a week, but I just feel like nothin gs working. All I want is for my son to say something!!! It's so frustrating and now I'm having my daughter in a few weeks and I feel as if I'm not going to be to devote as much time to my sons needs as I'd like."

I'm sorry your in that situation with the second comming, at least you got him started young, they really can work miracles before age 3! and he will catch up... Does he have a diagnosis?

i was just curious for all mamas, as to when you thought about speech therapy. cameron is 15 months and still only says mama dada baba and other jibberish. he is slighty tongue tied and also has a bad gag reflex. i know at his 12 month checkup the pedi said he may have to goto speech therepy because of the gag reflex and i didnt know when i should start to consider it as a an option

We started the ball rolling at 15 months I'm glad to see someone in the same boat as me. My son turned 2 a little over a month ago and he's been in early intervention since february. It is a tough decision when you start to young becuase to qualify they need a 50% delay in one area or a 33% in two or more areas, At 15 months the expectations are not as high, but at 18 they grow increasingly, I think you can get an re-evulation after 3-6 months if they don't qualify the first time, but it sucks if you start to early and then they don't qualify you have to wait..

But if he is having the gag reflux issue I would bring it up now, he may be able to get both speech and feeding therapy and the sooner you start the better for him

I totally know what you mean, Jamil currently has an Autism diagnosis, but I am not confident it's a true dx, Idk I just want to do everythign I can for him,

but he is soooo smart too, but his level of communication is still low, he knows tons and tons of words, but he isn't sharing intrest with us like he should, his play skills arent' where they should be, he isn't asking questions and he will respond to academic questions, but not conversational ones...

Nope at this point no diagnosis. I had his hearing checked and he passed with flying colors and now they suggested a neurologist to rule anything out. He's very advanced in motor skills, but when it comes to his speech he still only says mama and dada. They also feel that he might have some sensory issues, so next time I take him to the doctor we'll discuss that. I really dont know what else I can do for him.

You can get a referral from your doctor, but I'm pretty sure you can refer yourself.. Here is your states EI program, you can contact them and they can help you, If you can't figure it out form here let me know and I'll look around a bit more (I may anyway, but I'm laying with my son and have to pee so I'm having a hard time focusing

OHHH Look into the Sensory Issues ASAP, that was Jamil's issues, and until those were addressed he made very little progress, once he started he has made SO SO SO much progress, and it has made our lives so much more manageable..

Really? I didnt think that would be a serious issue. So what do I do, just talk to the pediatrcian??? What do they do if that is a problem, cause I've looked it up once they mentioned it and 90% of the things they mention are my son!
