I am going back to work in about3 weeks....My mother in law is going to watch Tyler ( he's 5 weeks old right now) and the other 2 days of the week I needed to find someone to watch him. There is a lady that specializes in watching babies that are too young to go to daycare. I have met with her....I personally know people that have used her and loved her. The past2 nights I have laid in bed almost having a panic attack thinking about letting someone that I dont really really know watch my baby while I'm at work. She seems like a wonderful lady...but what if he starts to cry and she does nothing about it, what if she puts him in a room and never checks on him until its almost time to pick him up, what if shes having a bad day? I cant do it now....after reading this and finding another web site and reading some of the stories....omg I just cried my eyes out! I think that between me panicking the past couple of days and reading all of this today..thats enough for me! He's my world and I am not willing to play roulette in hopes that she treats him good!

OMG I should NOT have looked at that site.
How could anyone ever hurt a baby?! It just boggles my mind and tears at my soul.

I actually work in public service (A district attorney's office) and I used to think "How could somebody ever shake a baby?!?! They would have to be completely stupid!" I think as everyone knows on here: an infant, especially a sick, colicky, or even a very fussy baby can be difficult and frustrating. Sometimes 1st time parents just don't know what to do, and they get so frustrated they just snap and end up shaking the infant or young baby. The parent is overtired, usually have other stresses, and don't know what else to do. We've even had cases where kids even at 2 years old got SBS. I have to say, a LOT of times the parent is young, inexperienced, or is low-income.
If your baby is crying, ask someone else to hold him/her while you go into another room or even outside for a few minutes. If you can't find anyone or don't know of a SAFE person to allow to hold your baby, there's nothing wrong with putting your baby down and letting him/her cry for a few minutes while you walk in another room. Just make sure you put your baby in a SAFE place (a crib, bassinet, etc...).
Also, I want to point out that a lot of SBS cases that come into our office are ones where the boyfriend/fiance/someone who is NOT the parent of the infant was watching the child and shook the baby.
Ladies, I know everyone on here loves their significant other, but please realize that men, especially young men, may get frustrated more easily than the actual parent of the baby. These men are often uneducated in baby care and they end up shaking the baby. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE! If you plan on leaving your baby with your boyfriend or fiance EDUCATE THEM! Tell them all about SBS and how important it is to NEVER EVER SHAKE A BABY!
Sorry about the long post, but I have seen many cases firsthand and totally agree that education on SBS should be something that is highly stressed.

Before we left the hospital, Brandon and I had to watch a video on SBS. It said, when you get frustrated, your child cant crie itself to death, just put it in the crib or swing and walk away for a min, and get your composer back

That is the most horrible thing I have ever heard..I mean I knew about the whole SBS thing but hearing a story of it happening has me in tears. I would have probably literally killed that babysitter. I hope I never need a babysitter.
