Heparin shots?
posted 27th Aug
Has anyone had to take heparin shots during pregnancy? I was just diagnosed with a blood clotting problem, but tested negative for any specific conditions as the cause (like I did several years ago). My blood clots too quickly and I have very small veins that require the smallest pediatric needles for IVs and blood draws. I was started on one 81 mg aspirin daily last Friday to help with circulation and to thin my blood down some. My OB/GYN told me I meet most of the qualifiers for requiring heparin in pregnancy, i.e.recurrent miscarriages, miscarriages after 10 weeks, placental abruption, family history of blood clots, and one pregnancy had clots in the placenta and umbilical cord. That was the only one they checked.

I had to do heparin flushes when I had my picc line not the same thing exactly. It made my heart hurt the first few times I got use to it though.

I just seems like my body hates me lately! I can live with giving myself the shots, not a big deal. I just have the concern that I'd have more risks due to the thinned blood like bleeding or miscarriage. I know I type reports all the time where women are on heparin in their pregnancy, but it's usually a visit relating to something else so I never know if they have any heparin complications.

I know when I delivered it was planned and they were prepared for my delivery. I had DDAVP given to me, since I do have thin blood. I dont know how they will do it for you, but I would ask alot of questions and they hopefully will ease your worry some/

I used heparin on me for about a month straight due to the strict bedrest i was on.They didnt want me to get thrombosis(sp?).It burns where its injected and you're not allowed to rub it(causes brusing). It was just another injection for me.I inject myself 5 times a day with insulin.Yea it sucks.

Hi there...need to be on heparin shots as well. Did you say that medicaid doesn't cover that or the other that you wereon? Went to CVS to fill script and found out that it is about $2000 / month....wow what do you do to help with the cost when you can't afford it and the doctor is saying that I must have it to carry full term...this is my 3rd time around and the other two didn't make it. Please let me know what happened to you so I can get on it asap. Still waiting for approval on medicaid since doc put me on High Risk watch. Thank you, concerned.....

I am on lovenox right now 2 times a day plus 81mg of aspirin a day plus some other stuff. It sucks but so far I have not m.c. so I am hoping this works.
I don't keep folic acid in my body and have a blood clotting problem so that is why I am on it.
Good luck!

I'm surprised Medicaid wouldn't cover the cost. I wonder if it's just your state's rules? I know a friend of mine had to take it and her insurance covered the costs. I'm fairly certain my insurance covers the cost of it as well. In my case I'm a little different. I have a subclinical clotting disorder, meaning I haven't managed to fit the diagnostic criteria for any of the common disorders but I do test positive for the antibodies to have antiphospholipid syndrome (APS). However, my antibody level is below the diagnostic threshold so I don't officially carry the diagnosis. I currently take 81 mg baby aspirin daily though and was told I needed to transition over to Lovenox at 6 weeks when I get pregnant because I have small blood vessels coupled with the recurrent miscarriages (another contributign cause besides clotting) and the one pregnancy where they tested the placenta they found that it was clotted.
I'm so sorry to hear about your loss.
ETA: My insurance definitely covers the cost of heparin/Lovenox in my formulary and even if I have to pay a full copay for everyday/shot, I'd still be at a maximum of $93 a month ($3 copay).

I started on the lovenox shots 3 days ago and they are no where near as bad as I read about. I also learned that they don't burn if you inject them slow. Very expensive...about $2000/mo. I take one shot a day and pray that I will be able to carry the baby full term this time around. Find out tomorrow if there is more than one. Can't wait to see! Thank you everyone for all your help and advise in regards to these shots.
