Breastfeeding and post partum period question...

posted 24th Aug
My son is now 8 months old and I just got my first post partum period. My question is....Does having your period mean that you stop producing your milk too? Or does is it just not enough milk for my little guy? Am I still making enough milk for him? He's pushing out his first tooth and he was refusing to eat as much as he usually does....could that be why I started my period already?

And could I build my supply back up but pumping?

Thanks for any feedback. I used the seach option and didn't find many answers.

Oh, one more....maybe TMI but when my period first started this morning is was a darkish brown color...is this normal?

you should be able to continue breast feeding normally.

You won't stop producing milk just because you got your period back. You are making the amount of milk he is drinking. BF is supply and demand...pumping can increase your supply. BF'ing probably stopped suppressing your ovulation because he hasn't been nursing as much.

Nope you won't stop producing. I started my first period at three months PP and my LO is exclusively BF! I was bummed! Dont' worry about the supply he'll buikd it back up himself when his teeth feel better. My LO has a rough time right now with teething and nursing too. Some days he's fine and others, you can tell it hurts him

Your period shouldn't have any inpact on your supply. Some people report that their supply dips when they start their period each month but I've read numerous articles that claim this is not likely. Your son's lack of interest in eating isprobably tied to his mouth hurting. My daughter does the same thing. You should give him a frozen teething ring a few minutes before nursing to calm him gums or you can use something like Hyland's teething gel to help numb him. Its probably just a coincidence that he doesn't want to eat right now while you're on your period.
