re: A 'new' Autism support thread

posted 28th Oct
Can you guys tell me the difference in high functioning autism and asburgers? I know many people with asburgers and have worked with many as well as many high functiong children but never older high functioning children becausenwe transitioned them to a more natural teaching session..

I'm curious if Jamil has asburgers but i've never seen it in young children... I guess it doesn't matter just want to know...

And were really having rough times over here.. We did goals today and tried an art class major fail.. So were going to take a break from gym and those structered community activities to try to break te aversion

everything has become a struggle.. He won't resopnd to any questions like do you want this etc and were really workig on it he seemed to almost have it and now it's gone

It is actually Asperger's Syndrome. I used to misspell it when I first got diagnosed and looked it up. From what I hear AS and High functioning are so very similar. I am not sure what the differences are, but when I was first learning about AS this is the site that saved my life and really helped me to learn.

It is a great site with lots of info. I found out that I had AS about 2 months before my 21st birthday. It was hard to learn, but good to finally have a reason behind my quirks. I don't think I remember much more about being young than an average kid. I do have an eye for detail though.

I was in college. I was on a team and got kicked off due to my issues. Sent home for the summer. I decided to go back to the shrink thinking just my ADHD and Manic Depression, but nope finally there was a name for what was going on with me, beyond me being a misbehaved child. AS was not diagnosable till 95, I got diagnosed in 98. Tough to grow up with something when no one knows what it is. I am so glad the spectrum is getting the recognition it deserves. I believe with early knowledge, intervention, and research there may be more options to help people out. Even if there is not a cure or any form of medication I believe that there is hope for a better future then what I grew up with.

Sorry it took me so long to respond... life around here has been oh so hetic,

I'm glad you were able to find out, and hopefully some closure with the knowledge of why you think/act the way you do... Sucks you couldn't have found out sooner...

I've spent the last 3 days reading everything I can, about HFA and AS. I'm fairly confident Jamil would meet the criteria for AS, although I'm not sure if they diagnosis it at this young, and if the services are different (better or worse) through Early Intervention, or the school district after he turns 3. I feel this need to know. I know the label is just a label it doesn't really say who he is or what he will achieve, but the Classic Autism Diagnosis he has right now just doesn't sit right with me. I hate that, I feel like that fact that it bothers me, makes me less of a Mom, like I'm unhappy with who or what he is, and that isn't true.. I just hate the unknown...

At 20 months when he was diagnosed he had maybe 4 words, and couldn't use any of them to request (besides signing for Milk, and Up, both were used to serve any type of discomfort or stress he had) The Criteria for AS says there can be no clinically significant speech delay and by the time he was 2, he had well over 50 words and soon after was pairing words, now he has almost 600 (I have an ongoing list in excel) and can use full sentances...

The other part of the criteria is that they must have average or above average IQ, and I'm waiting for the result from the Mind Institute, but according to the help charts, His cognitative ability is solid up to 30 months, and scattered up to 5 years. So I'm fairly confident he will have at least an average IQ...

and he did walk and climb early, but since he has had a lot of problems in Gross Motor Skills, Running, climbing, and throwing a ball specifically

He is efficent at getting what he wants, but can't have any type of conversation, It seems he is more announcing things, Like when he is hungry he will tell you he's hungry or even what he wants, but he doesnt' make sure your paying attention...

The biggest thing he is having problems with is if you ask him if he's hungry, if he wants an apple (even if your showing or offering it to him)

But if you showed him the apple and asked if it was an banana he has no problem with questions like those.. Which I would think is harder than do you want this...

Still having hard times over here...

Now getting dressed or undressed,
Changing diapers
shoes
turning off tv or game

Getting settled down to fall asleep is impossible he rambles on and on about any movie character toys anything, not is sentences just random utterances, and thrashes a bit, were having to lay down 2 or 3 times before he falls asleep, unless he is totally exhausted

He WILL NOT willingly get into the car unless I give him the ipod game... or play a movie and then it's hell getting him out, HE is screaming the whole time that he wants to go home.....

I'm sure there is more,

Just now joining the thread...hope I'm not too late.
Our son Jasper is 23 months old and has autism and sensory processing disorder. He is in speech, occupational and physical therapy (he is pigeon toed and cannot walk very well). He does not talk or communicate at all...he grunts and babbles the same as he did when he was 9 months old. In fact, that's where his cognitive ability is at.
He is pretty mellow, just ignores everything and spaces out, and is very obsessive. If you interrupt him at all, when he's doing anything, he will have a tantrum. We were lucky enough to get a subsidy for him to get into the Early Headstart program, where all of his therapists come to him (saves us a ton of time/gas). He is there from 9 to 2, five days a week. It is hard watching him at home as he cannot learn what he's not supposed to do, so every day we would chase him around and have to keep him from getting into things over and over again. He doesn't understand 'no', and doesn't respond at all if you call to him, which means we have to physically stop him, and then he freaks out because you are touching him.
I myself have severe anxiety disorder and am now pregnant with our 2nd child, so having him in Headstart has been a godsend. My husband was just diagnosed with an autoimmune systemic rheumatoid disease and he is going through intensive treatments, so between us it gets really hectic trying to keep after Jasper. And we have no family or friends that can help out...
Anyway. Just had to get all that out

It is def. not too late!   WELCOME!! That is wonderful that Jasper (love his name btw) got into headstart and therapy so young! As you probably already know, the earlier they start therapy, the better. I (along with everyone in this group) feels for you and have been/are going through it all! Feel free to ask questions, vent, or just chat anytime!
