How soon is too soon & How late is too late?

posted 8th Jul '07

Hiya, All~
I'm just wondering when and how much I should start getting stuff together for the baby? I was given a tun of things to give to my sister when she was preggo, but I never got it to her 'cause she lived in Texas and I live in Alberta, Canada... so I have some newborn onezies and a few bibs.
The hubby and I thought it would be smart to buy the bigger things whenever we see them on sale or for a good deal or something... that way it wont hurt our pocket book so much. I'm just wondering about the little stuff like diapers and wipeys and all the other little things that can be easily forgotten but very necessary. How soon is too soon and how late is too late to start accumulating things? And can anyone point me to a list of things one would need?
Thanks in advance, ladies! I realize I'm starting this pretty early, but I like to have things figured out and have a game plan ready so when the time comes... I don't have to run around like a chicken with my head cutt off.

I waited until my shower... and I've got alot. But yeah... I would suggest that you buy things as you can... stocking up on things like wipes and diapers... although... I don't know with diapers, because you just don't know how fast they're going to grow out of them. Hmmm..

I'm probably not going to get a shower until after the baby's born... that's how they do things around here anyway. If I was back home in Alaska, I'd probably be getting one in a month or two. However, I will be going down to the states at the end of the month for a family reunion/wedding and I know my grandma, sister, and mom will give me some things... probably not much, but I know they'll give me an outfit or two. Until the baby shower, I'm on my own for getting stuff together before the baby's born.

I'm getting a little ancious because we live in a tiny two bedroom appartment (it's actually the upstairs section of a house that they turned into an appartment for their dissabled daughter, but she moved to a facility where nurses and care givers can take care of her 24/7). There is no storage here so we've been using the second bedroom to put things like my art supplies, our books, games, my sewing supplies, my instraments and music, and our bulk items (like paper towels, toilet paper, and extra food that there's no room for in the cupboards). Now we have to start storing baby stuff in there and we're running out of room. So far I have a tupperwear container the size of a toy box full of baby clothes and blankets and one box with the content of a change table that still has to be put together. I don't know what I'm going to do because we don't have enough space and we may not be able to buy a house before the baby arrives. On top of that, we can't afford a storage unit every month for the things we don't use right now. I'm starting to get frustrated because I'm the only one trying to get something done around here... my hubby just works and comes home to play his game on the computer. If I mention that we should even oragnize that room, he says "it's too early, why do you keep pushing this on me" and gets all upset.

Grrrr I just wish I had friends or family near by. I know at least my mother-in-law would help me organize things to get rid of this stress. I'm really starting to miss home these days.

I am due next month and I havnt even bought any of the big items such as a crib, swing, etc. yet. The biggest reason is that I am really short on money. So, I just stock up on the little things now and buy things little by little, but I figure as long as I have everything before the baby is born Im ok. I am a big fan of the Baby Story/Bringing Home Baby on tv and I sometimes feel inadequate when I see all the things they have ready for the baby, but I try to be patient and understand that "good things come to those who wait"

That's true. You know, I watch those shows whenever I can and I've seen many of them more than once or twice. I know what you mean by feeling inadequate. I think these families either live beyond their means or are well off. I mean, the hubby and I can't afford much either. I think we figure that if we buy the big things here and there rather than waiting too long, our bank account wont be effected that much by the time the baby arrives.
We have a dresser/change table we bought from Ikea ($99 Canadian) and we bought a cute little crib (for only $25 Canadian). I'm not worried about getting a swing until after the baby arrives or shortly before. A car seat... we're just waiting for the right one to cross our path along with a stroler. We'll have to buy the little things like diapers and stuff closer to the end, I think. I don't think we'll have any more than the necessities. That'll make it cheaper... and when we do have the money and the baby's old enough to enjoy the extra stuff, then we'll spurge as best we can on the fun stuff.
