transitioning from family bed to toddler bed

posted 25th Jul
yeah, im sure its been talked about previously, forgive me for not wanting to flip thru posts...sorry...but anyways...

devyn still sleeps in bed with us, he's almost 18mo. i love the family bed sittuation...except for a few...minor...things...

for one, daddy dont like it. he claims he doesnt get well enough sleep on account of devyn sleeping sideways...or kicking him...and also he's a big guy, he needs room to stretch out...

so to wrap it up, ive been wanting to get devyn a toddler bed...but am unsure about certain things.

such as...uh, everything? what are some good tips ladies?

start with the toddler bed next to your bed so he doesn't feed rejected from the family room.
You might have to put him back in there a few times a night until he realizes that its his place to sleep

Just try to make everything fun and positive

We had a good opportunity to move her to her own toddler bed and room because we purchased a house when she was just over 2.
She was SOOO Excited for her bedroom, she helped us paint the walls, and pick out the colors and we made a big production of purchasing her new big girl bed, got butterfly covers that she wanted.
Then when we moved in, the first night, I tucked her in her new bed, did our bedtime routine... songs, prayers, kisses and hugs, and I held her little hand until she fell asleep.
She slept there all night until early morning when she got up and came in bed with us for a little while for some snuggles (she's 3 now and still does this, but I dont mind)

I did it the same way for a few weeks, until she was used to it enough to be able to leave her before she was all the way asleep.

We never had an issue with the transition... I guess it was good timing!
Good luck!

man that sounds like the most picture perfect transition, sharon! i wonder if i could get devyn excited about it...i wonder if he could grasp having his own bed yet. guess it doesnt hurt to try.

oh..and also..one thing im worried about, is that devyn still nurses at night. im worried he wouldnt go to sleep without nursing...and ideas on that one?

You shoulda quoted it!

Um... as far as the nursing goes, we weaned at 18 months so that wasn't an issue.
But you could always sit next to the bed and let him nurse and then put him in the bed and tuck him in! Just make it part of your bedtime routine...
Might be an advantage if it makes him drowsy, he'll fall asleep faster.

we are in the process of trying to switch to the toddler bed now, If you breast feed I would feed him, let him fall asleep and then move him the first couple of times. The bed is in our room so we wait for him to sleep and then move him. Sometimes it works and sometimes he gets up and wants to be in our bed.
