24 hour urine sample for protein

posted 28th Nov '06
Has anyone else had to do the 24 hour urine sample for protein? I have to pee in cups and then put the samples into a bucket for the next 12 hours (already got the first 12 hours down) and keep the bucket in the fridge. It's VERY inconvenient, but my obgyn is concerned about my risk for preeclampsia. I've never heard of this before.

Does anyone else on here curretly have or is at high risk for preeclampsia? I'm worried about what it'll mean if I do have it.

Thank you so much for that! I have really been wondering what I should or shouldn't be eating, since I went through pre-e last time around. I am somewhere around 3 weeks and just got my prenatal vitamins yesterday, and I am definitely going to benefit from this information you passed along!

My biggest problem is that I have never been a big veggie eater, besides corn or potatoes. I just can't bring myself to eat anything green, besides maybe lettuce, and I know that's BAD, but I am a picky, picky eater. Most the other things on the list though, I think I can handle.

One thing I wonder about this diet, can low-calorie or low-fat substitutions be used (like the cheese for example), because I am really wanting to keep my weight gain down. It just seems like if I eat everything it says to eat every day, I'll get HUGE!!!

at my doctor's office it is standard procedure to submit the 24 hour urine sample after the first visit. when i went in my first time and he told me to go downstairs and they would explain, i was totally confused because noone i know has ever had this before. but everything turned out fine for me. good luck!

I'm high risk, but things seem to be under control. I had to do the 24 hr urine sample, and if you're uncomfortable with putting it in your fridge, as I was, they recommended putting ice in a bag and placing the pitcher in the bag of ice. It's soo much simpiler than walking it back and forth to the fridge, plus it's a little more pleasing not to open your fridge and realize you have piss sitting there.
Don't stress out over it, what will be will be. If it does come back that you are, then take it with a grain of rice. Stressing and worrying over such things will only make matters worse.
Congrats on your pregnancy!!!
