Failure to thrive

posted 13th Jul
My daughter is 16 months old and has "failure to thrive". She weighs 15lbs, 7 oz and is 27 in long. The problem is that she also weighed 15lbs at her 1 year appointment and she has completely fallen off the growth curve for both height and weight. Her doctor is sending her to the allergist to check for food allergies (my husband and son both have them), he is running a ton of tests, and will be seeing her monthly. We may also be going to a pediatric gastroenterologist.
I had a similar problem when my was son was around the same age, only it was just his weight that fell off the curve. He went to a GI doctor, and all his tests came back normal. He is back on the chart and his growth curve is consistent now.
My doctor is pretty concerned because her height and weight have fallen off the chart. She eats a lot, more than my 3 1/2 year old.
Has anymore had a similar experience?

its normal to be almost the same from 12 to 15-16 mos. but 15 lbs is awfully light for a 1 yr old. i have no experience with it and nothing to offer but i hope they find out what is causing the problem momma.

I was like that when I was a baby/toddler.
I completely stopped growing at 12 years old.
I am 5 ft even and 90 lb LOL But I swear I am perfectly normal as I am sure your daughter is

I just found this out about two of my daughters. My middle child weighs 25lbs and is 3 years old. She is on the 3rd percentile for weight and 54th percentile for height. My youngest weighs 22lbs and is 2 years old, she is in the 3rd percentile for both weight and height. They were both preemies born at 31 weeks so their doctor is not too concerned. But we will be meeting with a nutritionist to set up a meal plan for both of them. They eat well but apparently just are not putting on the weight.

Yeah, I'm little too. I'm 5 ft tall too (well, 5ft, 3/4in, but I don't really care about the 3/4in), so I wasn't really concerned, but at her doctor appointment today, my doctor was really concerned about it and gave me a print out of all kinds of things that could cause her to have failure to thrive, and ordered a bunch of tests. I'm hoping he's just making sure everything is okay, which is fine by me, better safe than sorry.

My doctor is referring us to a nutritionist too. Kailyn was born at 39 weeks, she was just little (5lbs, 12oz, 17 1/2in). Her doctor told me to just up her calories as much as I can until we get the test results back and see the nutritionist.

It's a crap shoot.... you get a pedi like that.... you go to a different pedi and they say everything is fine

Question is: Are YOU concerned? This is one of those situations where the mother's intuition is the right answer, I believe....

I'm sorry to hear that.

If it makes you feel better, my niece at about 16 months was 17 LBs, and is several inches shorter than my son who is a month younger than she is.They ran all kinds of tests on her and found NOTHING! She's jsut a peanut.

Good luck!

I don't think I'm concerned. I wasn't until yesterday anyway, but even now I'm not really worried. I'd still rather do all the tests and know for sure though, you know?
