Low Iron

posted 9th Jul
Ariadne was diagnosed with low iron, and because of her history with digestive problems I opted not to give her the iron drops, which can be really hard on their littl tummies. Instead I'm trying to incorperate more iron rich foods in her diet. She's currently trying out home made chili. She doesn't really like meat so I'm trying to find other iron rich foods to try with her. Anyone have any meal ideas for vitamin and iron rich foods??

By not likes meat, I mean mostly not likes beef, she will spit it out and throw it at me. She doesn't seem to like the beans in her chili very much either, but she's eatting some of it.

try giving her other meats & mix them in other foods. She just might not like the taste.

I think dark leafy greens might have iron in them.

1 year olds should not be eating leafy greens! They are way to hard to chew with so little teeth!..salad and stuff like that is a choking hazard!

There's other ways to eat them.   My daughter eats lettuce, she loves it.

But try making spinach, then grinding it up.

yeah true about the spinach...you can do it with that and cook it. But it's still not very safe. My dad gave my sister a piece of lettuce when she was one, she ended up chocking herself pretty bad!

If you can get her to eat meat make sure she eats a lot of fruits and vegetables with it. It's supposed to help your body absorb the iron better, I was in the hospital for 2 months and thats what the dietician told me at least. I'm severely anemic but I'm not much help with the food, I have to take iron twice a day

It's true. the vitamin c and folic acid in fruits and veggies definitely do help absorb iron.
