Airport travel question
posted 27th Jun '07
My family and I will be moving back to the main land soon (hubby, our 2 children, and I) and since everyone will have their own seats, we can't decide on who's car seat to check in and who's to carry on, or if any at all. My son will be 23 months, is that too young to have him sitting on a plane seat without a car seat? Does anyone know if the plane will allow it? I'm gonna call the airlines but I was wondering if anyone here knows. And should I carry my daughter in my lap or should I take her carseat? It's gonna be an over night flight with a short lay over and a connecting flight.
Also, any tips on how to make it easier would be greatly appreciated

I can't help you (even though I should be able to since I worked for the airline )
But I wanted to see how your lil girl is doing!

Haha, it's okay She's good, thank you. She's actually sleeping, and for once, it's not in my arms! How's Sera? She's so adorable btw

woo yay for independance! lol Sera's good. She's got muscular torticollis and has to go through physical therapy for it and possibly surgery..so that blows. But she's getting big! She's already 11 lbs! She turned 3 months a week ago today.
Getting much sleep?

Wow, I can't believe she's already 3 months! I remember when you had her, and it doesn't seem like it was that long ago. Awww, poor little ninja. How's the therapy going? I hope she doesn't need the surgery. I've made an appointment with Lilly's doctor after I read your post cuz I've noticed that she only likes to keep her head in one direction too
Egh, sleep is non existant right now, she has a terrible habit of waking up at 12 am every morning. Then sleeping for hours straight around 6:30am, but that's when my son wakes
How about you? Is Sera finally on a schedule?
And how's work and school going?

She hasn't started therapy yet. I'm waiting on the stupid orthopedic surgeon to call me back. And they told me it would be a month before she got in after the phone call..it's really frustrating.
Sera is the same way...she stays up all night and crashes out about 8:30-9 every morning and will sleep until 6 at night...I have to go wake her up every day. She wakes up every 4-5 hours to eat, so that's not bad.
School starts next month...pretty excited about that..only two more weeks.
Not working due to going to school full time. I'm looking into doing some stuff part time from home or just work somewhere on the weekends. It's hard to find part time work though.

I wouldn't bring a carseat on the plane for your 23 month old. I would for the newborn though.

i would think 23 months is old enough to not nead a car seat. he can sit up on his own and hold his head up and all that other great stuff....and the seat belt is just on the lap. the reason they use car seats in cars is because the seat belt doesn't fall in the right place.
but yeah call and find out for sure! LoL
and i would think, do not hold your daughter on your lap! (i mean do, but don't depend on it for the entire flight, let her have her own seat if you can afford it) because that sounds like a looong flight! so that would get uncomfy. and with the seat she will have the support of her head and neck that she needs, even if your arms are tired LoL

i dont no which airline your flying with but i no most airlines any child under the age of 2 flies for free and has to sit on an adults lap so you might want to look into the airline that your choosing and there policys

I believe airline policy is that 2 and up can sit in a seat without a carseat.

2 and under can fly free - but they have to sit in your lap. With that being said if you are flying with more than one child - that would mean your husband would have to hold one and you would have to hold one.
Seeing that you said you all had your own seats you were just trying to figure out which carseat to bring on board - I say your son is good to sit in a seat by himself due to him being almost 2 - he is not going to stay locked down in a car seat - especially with so much to see on a plane...lol...
I would bring the seat for your daughter just because she is an infant and you are going to want to put her down at some point and that is the safest way for her to travel.
And since it is an overnight flight - with stops and all that - I say check everything you have except the necessities - car seat, dvd player and movies, diaper bags with snacks, pillows, etc.
Good luck on your flight.

for all baby's you can sit adainst the wall and they will set up a besenete for you! you need to call in advance and tell there you will be traveling with a baby! They will hook it up against the wall and its only the seats with the wall in front of you near the bathrooms.....but its nice the besenete will keep them safe cuz you can strap them in kinda and also some rock (depends on the class and airplane carier)

well i havent been on a plane with my son in a while, he was 18 months old when he went and i had him in his car seat, to keep him in one place, if its going to be a long flight i would bring his car seat, because it can make him feel secure if he does get scared.
my son isnt a lap kid and when he's sleepy its his bed or his carseat, he will not fall asleep in your arms, plaus when he's in his car seat, he knows he has to stay there, most airlines will make you put the car seat by the window so he can look out the window, and you can always get him up to look around.
i've also heard of airlines providing littel bassinet baskets for small babies on long trips... check with your airline. toddlers do like to explore, and sometimes having them in thier car seat can help keep them form getting upset that they cant... plus having your toddler in a car seat will sit him higher so he can reach that pull down tray better. for eating and coloring.
and you probably wont want to have the infant carrier shoved down by your feet the whole time, that seems like it would be uncomfortable.

Thanks for the advise everyone! I still haven't been able to get a hold of the airlines, but i'm gonna try again later today. And I'm still on the fence on what I'm gonna do (I'm really indecisive, if you couldn't tell). I just really don't want to be dragging two carseats through the airport to catch another plane, then through the aisles, all while carrying two kids. But as one lady pointed out, I might need it to keep my son from jumping around, and he is the type of kid that'll only fall asleep in his carseat, bed, or stroller (unless he's really tired) thanks for reminding me . When we moved here, we actually used it an he did really well, people actually commented on how they didn't even realize there was a kid sitting infront of them. I might try it without one this time, see how he does (can you tell I'm putting too much thought into this lol).
I also don't want to be carrying my daughter for 5 straight hours, but either way might end up doing it (she has days where she'll only stay quiet if she's in my arms). And now that I know you can request a bassinet, I'm considering it That's so cool, I didn't know they had them. Then I worry that if we check the seats in, they might get lost, and we won't have them after the flight to make the drive to our home town....Ahh, I think too much. Anywho, I'm taking everyone's advise into consideration. Thank you!

I just needed to tell you I have a son named Kenneth too, and he is named after a friend that was killed in the Navy! Sorry i just wanted to add that.
I took Kenneth to Nevada at 28 months and used his car seat on the plane, it was hard to carry around for connecting flights though. And I was 5 months pregnant
