labor story :-) *updated with pics!!!*
posted 26th Jun
Well, the story goes that I did not want an induction because I wanted the excitement of feeling those contractions, or waking up to my water breaking. That's not how it happened though.
I had a couple little piddly squat nothing contractions last Tuesday before my doctor's appointment. DJ took it upon himself to call his work to let them know that he might need a back up person to come in later. Five minutes after that, they called him and they had had every last shift of his covered until sunday 0.0 I freaked out. I thought to myself, "what's the point of having these days if I don't have the baby?"
I went to my doctor's appointment, and I had been at a half a centimeter for the last three visits, and starting to thin out..but not enough. So my doctor checked me and I was at a 2, and thinned out a bit more, he didn't say how much. He offered to induce me since I was four days over, and he doesn't like you to be more than a week overdue because it's a liability to his practice. So I opted for the induction, because then at least DJ would have four days off with us as a new family.
My induction was scheduled for 6 a.m. the very next day, which was June 20th. :-) We arrived on time, and I was sooooo nervous, because once they started my pitocin, I knew that was it. So at 6:15 my labor was started. But my nurse was at the end of her 12 hour shift, so she blew two veins, and handed me off to someone else! So I had bruises on my wrist, and arm. I finally got stuck on my right hand..damn them, it wasn't pleasant.
My contractions started out pretty normal, my mom showed up around 8 in the morning with the video camera....she brought it just in case I changed my mind about taping the birth.
Dr. Beckman came into my room around 9:30 and asked how I was doing, and he checked me and I was between 2 1/2 and 3 1/2 cm, he then said,"okay we're going to break your water now" and I was like,"WHAT!? you are? right NOW?" haha it was so funny, and he took this popsicle stick looking thing and popped my water...it felt so nasty.
My contractions got stronger after that and started hurting like a freaking mother! I had back labor for an hour and a half, and by this point I was about 4 cm dilated, and I had had no drugs whatsoever. All my family showed up at that point, and so did DJ's...and everyone kept coming in and out. My mom was supposed to work at 10 am, but she called and they had enough people covering in the lab to let her stay with me until 1 p.m. (she draws blood at the hospital so it was very convenient.)
I finally begged for something, not an epidural. I was adamat about not having a needle stuck in my spine. I don't care what they say, that crap slows down your labor...I know like four people who had c sections because their epis slowed them down. So I was given Stadol in my IV and I was loopy for the rest of my labor.
DJ was in and out a whole lot talking to his parents and keeping track of the details for people, my mom was videoing now and then. I got to a point where I was laying on my side through all my labor because it stopped my back labor, but the contractions were hell. My mom was helping me breathe through everything, and DJ was getting my washcloth damp for my forhead, and I had them turn off the lights because they made me hurt worse. I was in transition mode by then and only at a 6 or 7...and it was like 12 p.m. I was sleeping between my contractions, even though they were only like 3 minutes apart at first and then getting wayyy closer and stronger. I could feel Mele coming down when I felt like pushing, but my nurse who was hella cool, her name was Michelle, kept on checking me and letting me know everything that was going on...I told her around 12:25 that I felt like pushing, and she was like,"are you sure?" so she checked me and I was complete, and I was so happy.
So I started pushing, and everyone was moving crap around, and my sister came in and they said no one else could come in or go out. I was so out of it that I barely remember everything around me. Just my mom helping me breathe, and DJ was putting cold compresses on my forhead and petting my hair and kissing me..it was sweet..lol and when I pushed he pushed my head down onto my chest to help me bare down. It helped so much!
I was told I could be pushing for two hours, but I didn't...and they got the doctor in fast! He was so awesome, and we ended up taping the last twenty minutes of everything. The nurse told me that she saw hair, and I was all excited and wanted to see, so they got me a mirror, so when I pushed I would watch what was going on and it was awesome! her head was peeking out and I saw her black hair! it was amazing!
I had her head out in like three pushes, and the doctor stretched me pretty well so I only tore a little bit, but it was in two places, and then he said that the umbilical cord was wrapped around her neck, and it wasn't tight so he wasn't concerned, and he eased her little shoulders out and she was on my chest! It was awesome...she was purple though..and messy! and DJ got to cut the umbilical cord. Everyone told me not to drop her so they helped me hold her, but I was like,"get her cleaned up!" I didn't say that, but I was worried about her color..so they roughed her up and she screamed and screamed...and she looked like a little monkey!
So she was born at 12:47 pm. she weighed 6 pounds 11 ounces 19 1/2 inches long, and she was so freaking hairy..lol. The nurses had to give her a shot to reverse the effects of the Stadol that I'd been given, which was why she was purple. So they held off on her apgars, and she got an 8 and a 10 in the end..which is so close to perfect :-)
She was born with a heart murmur however, but the pediatrician said it was going away...and most infants were born with a slight one..so I'm not a whole lot worried. Mele was so aware of everything when she was born, and her eyes were all sparkly. She didn't have her eye drop things until an hour after she was born just because they wanted us to bond..it was amazing. I will never talk crap on that hospital again..except they screwed up our paperwork when I signed a waver for her to NOT get her Heb B shot, I figured since it's not required until kindergarten, why do it when she's 24 hours old? So the nurse either read it wrong, or didn't bother to read it because the paperwork had just been changed, so she still got the shot and ended up being almost comatose from her damn shot for 12 hours, she didn't eat, poop, or pee, and she would NOT wake up. I was frightened out of my mind. That crap totally messes with them and makes them feel awful. I bawled..it was so frusterating.
But she's fine now, and her heart murmur is fainter..she's a little jaundiced, but it's going away now.
I guess during my labor I was kinda weird and someone made a comment about,"what if it's a boy after all?" and I said,"well I guess we'd need to name him" so then I spewed out this totally random name..lol, and I said,"his name would be Pierce Lyle." and that was that, no one said crap anymore. haha.
DJ came in when I went into a bad contraction, and my mom and I had a system..no one was allowed to touch me, and he came in, and I said to my mom,"contraction...don't let him touch me!!!" haha...i kept smacking him and my mom away, and when I was supposed to blow instead of push, they wanted me to do the "he he whoooo" and I couldn't so I'd put my hand up to shut them up..lol.
It was a fast labor, and she's healthy, and I am sooo happy :-) I love being her mommy.
