Afraid of sand??!! HELP!!

posted 4th Jul
So we (me, daddy and Averi, who is 23m) just got Ocean City Md after an almost 5 hour drive. After surviving that ordeal we decided after unpacking to go see the beach. So we walk the block and a half away. So far so good. We very nicely tried to introduced Averi to sand and.........
"OUCH! Ouch! Ouch!"
She refused to stick ANY part of her body in it and held so tightly to daddy it was insane. I showed her it was fun and soft and all. Its not hard grainy sand and it was super cool being 6pm. She even watched kids run around in it. No matter how we tried she REFUSED to even come an inch close to it and all she would say is "ouch!".

Is this normal????????
How do i get her to overcome this???
Is it overcome-able????

We plan on going all day tommorow and i dont want her to just be sitting in our little tent upset and bored cause she wont touch the sand. She seen the ocean but the loud waves nerve her more.

Oh and yes, this is her 1st time ever seeing a beach. But not sand bacause she's played in sandboxes. She knows what they are....so i'm lost. HELP HELP!

I absolutely hated the sand when I was younger. My mother could not get my onto a sandy beach, I would just lift my legs and hang there. lol So she would put me on a towel and I would sit there contently.

I hated the feeling of sand between my toes and on the bottom of my feet. lol

Some kids just get freaked out about new textures. Maybe giving her some sand to play with in a bottle then a little in a bowl she can stick her hands in? I'd just slowly introduce it to her.

My son did and he eventually got over it. He was really young when we introduced him to the beach though. Just keep going and eventually she'll get over it.

My oldest was terrified of Sand and snow.

She is going on 6 now, and is over it.

It just happens!

I love OC Maryland! My little brother was the same way about grass when he was about that age, my mom just sat with him out in the yard on a blanket and eventually he started to slowly move towards the grass. he got over it pretty fast

she said her daughter has played in sand boxes, so it's not a new texture for her. It is a new setting for her however, she said her daughter's never been to the beach.....

Correct. She loves dirt and rocks and such.
I dont know why she thinks "ouch!" though....*shrug*

Happy to here its a common phase and is easy to overcome...eventually.

Maybe the sand is hot to her. It might feel fine to you but you also have callouses on your feet and babies skin is super sensitive.

You know i thought of that after like 5 min of trying. I cant imagine how it would feel to "virgin" feet. I guess i can understand the ouch-ness to it.
I just hope spending some more time on it tommorow will give her some more confidence to play in it. *cross fingers*

That's what I would do. Good luck!

Put shoes and socks on her if you have to... and take a big blanket or lots of towels so if she wants to just sit.. Or you can get a blow up pool for her to sit in?

My daughter was scared of the beach sand the 1st time too and she had also played in a sandbox before. I think it had to do with how big it is overall. We didn't make a big deal of it. THat week we just let her remain on the beach blanket. We would fill a frisbee with sand and place it on the blaket for her to play with and she was fine with that. The following year she was fine when we went on vacation.

sometimes it hurts kids feet because there feet are not as tough as ours. They still have baby feet
