Picture quality

Question. I make random graphics for people, and when I make them, they look good, the quality is good. I upload them to photobucket to post them on here for pick up & once I post them on here, the quality goes wayyy down, like the pics get grainy. Do any of you know what this is from or how I can fix it? It's driving me nuts trying to figure it out & I don't want to keep posting everything I have on here with it looking like that. It's been 2 days since I posted my last "request" and I still have quite a few to put up. The majority are done, it's just, I don't want to post them looking like shit...

If you look at my most recent post "request stuff. please" I think on page 3 I have quite a few posted for an example of how they turn out.

When you save it does it compress the file? If so then that will make things grainy, also I think that PB does that automatically.

i think its photobucket that does it because it never says anything about compressing the file. i'm guessing that there is no way to change that?

I don't think so since it's free storage and all. I use and pay for smugmug.com and LOVE everything about that site! I'll never go back to PB for my own pictures!

How much is it? I don't have extra money to spend so I probably wont be able to use that site

Around $30 a year, you can get a free trial and try to upload them there and see if it even makes a difference first.

do you save them as PNG files?

The animated ones are saved as GIF & I'm not too sure about the regular graphics. On photobucket they come up as BMP files? if that sounds right..

what size are you saving them as?
It could be becasue you are trying to fit a higher resolution in BG's 400x400

I know when I post larger quality pictures on here it gets grainy put when you right click the image and click view image it looks normal.

That may be it. Idk the size but I really don't think it's bigger than that. So, when I post them, when the person saves it to their computer it looks good to them? Not all grainy?

If they come up as BMP on PB, then that is what they were saved as. That particular file type is extremely "lossy" meaning that it loses quality to ensure that the file size is small and manageable. When you save your graphics, make sure you save them as JPG or JPEG; they will not lose as much quality and will have very little loss.

Also, check the size of the file you are uploading to PB. Just under where you select to upload photos there is a dropdown for the size that PB will upload the image as. I keep mine set to "1 megabyte file size" to make sure that there isn't loss because of PB resizing it.

And lastly, BG has a resolution limit and will resize anything you post to fit into the forum threads. If you right click the image and select "view image" or copy and paste the location of the image and view it in a new window, it is much better quality because you can then view it at full size. BG only resizes it in the forum but doesn't alter the actual file.
