Need ideas for 1st b-day party

My son's first birthday is coming up in about 3 months.He's my first child so iknow nothing aboutthrowinga birthday party. My question is is it worth it to have an actual party? or would it be better to just have cake at home with a few family members? I was wanting to have small party but i dont know what to plan. any suggestions?

We had a small party at a nearby park just family and maybe a few friends..all in all there was 15 ppl that ended up coming. We reserved the pavilion there (it was free) and had hamburgers and hotdogs and cake. We had lots of fun. I say if you wanna do small just have family like you said..

I also bought one of those keepsake mats that you can put a pic in and have people sign it. I thought it would be special since it was her first birthday; I paid $5-6 from Hobby lobby and she had her own little cake she got to tear to pieces. We just did pink and brown and had paisleys and polka dots on her cake. It all turned out really cute. It is not how big the party or how much you spend, it is that he spends it with family and be sure to take plenty of pics to show later on!!
