vaginal birth v's elective c-sections

posted 4th Jul
Ok, after my last appointment at the hospital we went to a skin doctor to get my MIL's perscription written out. While i was waiting in the waiting room i noticed a picture of some skin abnormalitities and i noticed my birthmark was on there, well a similar one, so when i went in i asked the doctor to take a look and he instantly said, it needs to come off. I was mortified!!ive had my birthmark since birth and its always been apart of me. I asked i it could be left on and he said no, if i dont get it removed then it can progress into melanoma, although its ok at the moment, but it definatly is not normal. Since im obviously pregnant he said if i had a c-section then to get my doctor to take it off there and then, or alternatively if i have a vaginal birth to wait 3 months and be sent back to another doctor and to go under general anaesthetic and have it removed then. I dont like the fact of going back in hospital for god knows how many days being away from my little boy, so i dont know whether to get it dealt with altogether. If i could give birth vaginally and have an epidural and then they take it off at the same time that would be great. Im torn between the two and i keep reading the pros and cons of each. I am aware how serious of a surgery a c-section is but i think id rather only have to heal once instead of twice, im so confused. Im also going to speak to my doctor at my next appointment which is on the 24th of this month, but i am just trying to figure out what i would like to do before hand. What would you ladies do if you were in my shoes??

Where on your body is this birthmark?

I've had 4 birthmarks/moles (1 on my back,1 on my stomach and 2 on my leg)removed so far and didn't require anything but an local anethetic..

I had a small mole down there and had a vaginal birth with epi and she removed it right after I gave birth. I wouldn't have a major surgery just for that

I would most likely go the elective c-section in your case. Yes it is a serious surgery, however you have to think of your life AFTER the birth as well. And being in hospital for several days could be a huge hassle while having a baby. Hell even being in hospital for one day while you have such a young baby would be a pain in the ass. IMO.

the top one was before my belly started to grow, this is one of the most recent ones and as you can see its grown quite a bit. i dont even know if it wil shrink down or stay that size after the birth

I'd try not to get too caught up in the hype of 'c-sections are horrible.' My Aunt has had two elective and she swears by them. She was up and about less than 24 hours after her second. So try not to beat yourself up about it.

With any kind of birth there are complications, medicated, drug free, water birth, c-section, all of them have their pros and cons. Talk to your OB and decide from there.

I personally would do a c-section but there are alot of things to consider first. It is major surgery but the risks that everyone talks about are very small.I've had one section and had an easy recovery but everyone is different.Educate yourself about the process and use the great recovery tips on this site to help your recovery go smoother. The vast majority of c-sections and recoveries go along just fine. There are a small number of moms who have especially hard surgical recoveries but there are moms who have very hard vaginal recoveries. If you chose to do the c-section talk to other moms so you know pretty much what to excpect going in.I think having a positive mindset going in helps alot in the long run.Keep in mind though that having a c-section now could make it alot harder to do a vaginal delivery in the future,so you need to consider any future plans also. The best thing I could say is that the decision is us up to you, educate yourself as much as possible and talk to your OB.Make the best decision for yourself and good luck.Best wishes for an easy and happy delivery.

Thanks for your input, im also guna speak to the surgeon about what happens with the removal of teh birth mark too, just so im fully aware. Ideally i could have a vaginal birth and them remove the birth mark all in one day, then i could get the best of both worlds, but im not sure if theyd do that lol

Oh some other thingsif you have a vaginal delivery you'll get the baby placed on you chest right away while the cord is cut.The worst part of a c-section to me (I've had both)is not being able to hold the baby right away.So before you make your decision here are some questions to ask the ob about the hopital.I elected to have my c-section and these questions helped me prepare better for what to expect.1.)Are baby and dad allowed to stay in the OR during the repair? Alot of hospitals will send baby and dad to the nursery while your getting stitched up leaving mom all alone for the rest of the surgery.I was lucky ,my baby and hubby got to stay with me the whole time,my hubby walked out of the OR behind me.2.)How long are you usually in recovery? 3.) Are baby and daddy allowed in recovery with you? Some hospitals don't allow anyone including the baby in recovery with you and some hospitals do allow them in there with you.Moms are typically in recovery 1-3 hours. If you want or are thinking of breasfeeding it could be awhile before you get that first feeding. If the baby is allowed in recovery then it would be sooner.I was lucky my hospital doesn't have a recovery room for c-section moms, you go from OR to your post partum room.So I got to feed her 45 minutes after delivery. Some moms just aren't comfortable with losing the baby for potentially 3-4 hours. So ask your ob about hospital policy and you'll know what to expect of you have a c-section.Its better to know ahead of time than to find out in the OR.
