re: Caffeine Is Comparable To Smoking While Pregnant

Quoting MommyRu:“ We have all debated about smoking during pregnancy... Recent studies about caffeine intake while pregnant ... [snip!] ... and who had no history of a miscarriage experienced higher risks for miscarriage associated with caffeine consumption”

1,063 participants is no where near statistically significant, therefore all "findings" are moot.

I was thinking the same thing.

And anyone who drinks five or more 12 oz cans of soda a day is at risk or other health issues I would think. That is a ton of extra sugar with added nutritional value what-so-ever. I would think the same goes for excessive coffee drinking, since very few people actually drink their coffee just plain old black.. Just my two cents. LOL

Oh I completely agree though!

I'm down to one -- maybe 2 -- diet sodas a day. Even then, it's hard to finish a can. I put it down somewhere and forget! lol... And it's diet soda, so the sugar isn't an issue.

My OB told me two cups of coffee was fine. I used to go to starbucks when I was pregnant and the barista will always ask me " what can i make you decaff" I was like " You think I'm going to pay 5 dollars for decaf lol
They always gave me a judging look

It was hard for me to give up Caffine with my first pregnancy (actually I quit when we started TTC)

I quit up until he was one year (BF) but after the one year mark I started drinking a lot of caffine again (I still bf)

I can't imagine how hard it would be on someone who is pregnant with a toddler though, I believe I will quit again for my second baby, but I know the temptation will be greater...

Also it really makes me wonder how many issues my son would have if I did do the risky things during pregnancy, he has enough as it is.. and I was by the book

I started drinking coffee at 9 or 10 years old.   When I was about 15 I started drinking coffee all day, and by age 17 and 18 I worked at a coffee shop and drank triple expressos!   I barely ever drank water, if I drank something that was cold (besides cold coffee) I'd have coke.

I also smoked two packs or more a day!   I swear, giving up smoking was EASY compared to giving up caffeine during pregnancy! I still drank alot of sodas and had a few cups of coffee every morning.

I find this really funny. if you eat too much red meat , if you eat too much fish, if you fart too hard, something can wrong in pregnancy. Its not always linked to the caffine, the fish or the beef. the people they study aren't always followed with a fine tooth comb. you never know what they were doing on the side. Think back to our parents. They smoked, drank alcohol, cokes, and ate fish with mercury. i'm not defending those things, and i think that if things are done in moderation then its better off. drinking a case of cokes a day isn't good for anyone. Just use common sense...
