Questioin about gas and pooping!

posted 2nd Jul
Question for you girls, Landon has a really hard time when he tries to have a bowel movement. He cries and strains and kicks his little legs for almost an hour before he finally gets it out. He goes twice a day now, breastfed and has rice in one bottle a day for the last two days (md advised to), his poop is soft so I know it's not constipation. My question is have any of you other ladies ecountered this and what can I do to help ease his pain? Does he just not understand how to get it out? He is on prevacid for reflux but I can tell the diff b/w reflux pain and his gassiness pain. He passes lots of gas too, he now weighs 7 lb 3 oz and is 5 and 1/2 weeks old, just some history. He has only had the rice in his bottle with breast milk yesterday and today so these issues were going on before the rice. Md said something about karo syrup and water but I can't remember the combo. Thanks for the help ladies!

How old is he?
If he's still a newbornish age, he might be having problems finding the muscles to use to poop. We would take a lubed thermometer and just stick the tip in to help remind both of the kids what muscles to use.

Also, we would use 1 tsp in a bottle of 6 ounces of the dark Karo syrup.

My LO doesn't poop for 7 days, but the day she does, she's cranky all day, I think it's because she's forgotten HOW to poop lol.

ETA: I read your post wrong.

It could be something in YOUR diet. Do you drink dairy?

my daughter is 9 weeks old and has the same issue. Reflux, but we use barley instead of rice, and the kicking/straining/crying to poop. I bicycle her legs and massage her tummy. I also use a rice pack warmed in the microwave to help her out. Other than that, there isn't much I have found to help her go or ease the pain when she goes.

I just heard that recently - that baby's reflux can be cause by something in your diet. THe first to go should be dairy, then try wheat/gluten.

I personally think reflux is diagnosed too freely and can be easily resolved in the breastfed infant, by the mother's diet. My daughter was reflux-y and I had to cut out dairy, wheat, gassy veggies, chocolate, and citrus fruit. At almost 6 months, she's over it and I'm slowly adding things back in. She never had an issue unless I ate one of those things.

Wow all great responses and fast too.

Landon is 5 1/2 weeks old, my md just sent me a message about rectal stim with the thermometer as well. And giving dark karo with water as a bolus.

I cut out all dairy in my diet and fresh vegetables when he was born.

I do the bicycle with his legs and some times it works other times he is not having it.
I really think he forgets how to poop or use the right muscles, he'll fuss and scream and then fall asleep and then wake up and sitting there all calm have a big explosion like the event never happened.

I was using gripe water, but he is on prevacid and can't take it with that b/c the prevacid won't work. But it did work great before prevacid.

He is gassy too, like when he eats he passes gas a lot. Like he is not thinking about it and it comes out easy. He burps really loud too.

Yes, I totally agree with you. I also think cereal in the bottle is also prescribed far too frequently too, but who would listen to me over a Dr.? I hate it that Doctors think they're God or something.

My Md is also a friend so I really like her, she recommended rice in his only one bottle a day but that was it. She had also recommended all the same diet cut backs I was chugging milk when i was pregnant and had to cut it out completely when she saw him at the hospital when he was born, that was hard.
