Quoting BethGMama:“ Well, thanks for that info. I will keep it in mind. I think my aunt did it that way because she did use ... [snip!] ... She also sent all her kids to daycare/preschool at like 2/3 also, so she did everything weird, but her kids are all healthy.”

it's not that what she did is weird-- on the contrary, it's actually very normal by american standards, but as we've come to realize (via research) breastmilk is a superior food from anything we could make. not only that, but it release magical substances (not really magical, but you're not going to be able to get them anywhere else) such as oxytocin (bonding hormone) and anandamide (a relaxing neurotransmitter)...

so the benefits of "extended" breastfeeding are definitely visible if you have the time and space to continue.

for example, i've had very little trouble w/ max's teething-- b/c the magical boob soothes him SO well. and he's got FOUR molars coming in at the same time. but still, he's a very easy happy kid most of the time, and when he had a low-grade teething fever, the boob took care of that very effectively as well.

also, he's never been truly sick-- sniffles and coughs are all-- and not even enough to keep him in bed or crying. the passive immunity in breast milk is just another huge benefit you can't get anywhere else.

Quoting Mara:“ actually, 6 - 9 months is a fairly early weaning time slot. it's really better to let your child wean ... [snip!] ... when they have stronger stomaches and are eating a wider variety of foods to replace the many nutrients they get in breastmilk.”

I've always wondered how babies self wean. How do they just decide they dont want it anymore if they've never had anything else?

Just like anything else, they just outgrow it. Most children self-wean between 18 months and four years. I'm hoping mine waits for that four year point, at least.

Im 16 and expecting, I plan to breast feed for as long as i can. Its way healthier for the baby and i honestly could care less what other people think, just so long as my baby gets the nutrients it needs to be healthy. Breast feeding is totally natural no matter how old you are. Hope this helped!

As long as you are healthy, and not partying and shit, I think it's damn smart of you to exclusively breastfeed! I was pregnant at 16 as well, and I breastfed my daughter exclusively for almost 10 months! (She refused to take solids until then, and she breastfed CONSTANTLY!) I'll breastfeed this one as well, and I'm still young (at 18 years of age).

ETA: I breastfed my daughter until she was 13 1/2 months old, and I had gotten pregnant again.

I'm 18 and am planning to breastfeed as long as I can, or as long as he wants. I don't find it weird or disgusting. I'm just hoping I can get the hang of it. None of my friends with children BF, I'm not really sure why.. But I hope they're supportive of me doing it because I have no intentions of leaving the room or wherever we are just so my son can eat.

i remember being a teenager... life was very extreme... emotions were extreme, thought processes were extreme. you always feel like everything is THE most important, worst, best, hottest, ugliest, dumbest... etc.

so-- my comment was basically saying, perhaps something like breastfeeding-- a behavior that's totally natural in reality, just seems weird b/c life as a teenager is weird.

think about it: it's a pretty strange question in the first place. it's sort of like asking, "is eating food weird, b/c i'm a teenager?"

I just turned 19 & i also thought breast feeding would be weird because i always saw more older women doing it than younger ones. But after reading up on it,i've decided that im going to do it,once my baby comes which could be anyday now.Because the baby really needs it and its the best nutrients for the baby.

That was how I felt about it too, none of my friends chose to BF except for me. Its not weird at all once you start doing it.
