Measles

posted 2nd Jul
I was watching Law and Order the other night & the episode really affected me. It was about a young mother who wasn't very involved in her young daughter's life and didn't know where she was. That's how they always portray young moms on television of course. They found her dead on the beach underneath a pile of cardboard. They thought it was the young mom that killed her, but it wasn't. It was measles. Her daughter was too young to get the vaccine, went to a park, and contracted it from an older child who wasn't vaccinated. Her mother was planning to give her all her vaccinations but she was too young to get the MMR. She died as a result of the other mother's "beliefs" that vaccination is not right. And as a result her son gave the incredibly deadly illness to an innocent little baby that was too young to get the vaccine anyways. The mother didn't even feel bad about it or think she caused her death. How do you feel about this? I know there are people at different ends of the spectrum, but when I saw that I was pissed. If my son got sick because some mother didn't vaccinate her child i'd be furious. I believe that not vaccinating is endangering everyone else. The diseases vaccines protect against are very deadly. I think dying or killing other people's children is worse than getting autism, but then again I don't even believe they cause autism. My cousin has autism and I know a woman whose son has autism and I participate in all the walks to find a cure, but not vaccinating is not the cure. Those are my personal views.

Here's some info on measles in case you didn't know:

Measles, also called rubeola, is a highly contagious respiratory infection that's caused by a virus. It causes a total-body skin rash and flu-like symptoms, including a fever, cough, and runny nose. Though rare in the United States, 20 million cases occur worldwide every year.
Since measles is caused by a virus, there is no specific medical treatment and the virus has to run its course. Measles is highly contagious — 90% of people who haven't been vaccinated for measles will get it if they live in the same household as an infected person. Measles is spread when someone comes in direct contact with infected droplets or when someone with measles sneezes or coughs and spreads virus droplets through the air. A person with measles is contagious from 1 to 2 days before symptoms start until about 4 days after the rash appears.

And measles is just one of the many things you can protect your child and other woman's children against.

I would like to know people's opinions on this, and why you chose to vaccinate or why you didnt.

i think that i saw that one before..

i dont know how to feel about this..because its such a touchy subject. i dont think its fair for unvaccinated kids to make others kids sick.. but i also dont have a problem with a mothers choice not to get their child vaccinated. I cant really decide. I dont know if there is a way for that mom to warn the other childrens mom that her child is not vaccinated, but then thats not fair to the child.. im rambling.. its a hards to say

I see both sides to the debate but my husband and I have made the personal decision that we feel it's best that we vaccinate our children. I feel that when people suddenly stop vaccinating is when an epidemic of these illnesses will return.

My son somehow missed one of his vaccinations and the school caught it when we enrolled. He was not allowed to start school until his vaccinations were up to date.

A baby at my son's daycare had Measles. And a few other babies had a form of bacterial bronchitis. Thankfully my son only caught was seems like a cold from all this. We follow the recommended vaccination guidlines. However, I was told by our pedi that they don't get the MMR vaccine until a year old because the mother was vaccinated for it. Either way, I will continue to follow the recommended schedule as I believe the benefits outweigh the risks BY FAR.

Yea it definately is. But even if the mom told the other childrens moms, I guess they would just be playing at their own risk. I do believe a woman has a right to chose what's best for their child, but at the same time I don't believe a woman has a right to endanger other womens children.

yeah it is oral. It really messed my son up, he wound up having to have surgeries and still has lots of thriving issues.

That's true schools require vaccinations. Because in a setting like that disease spreads quickly. So do the non-vaccinated kids get home schooled or something?
