What I meant by that is the real world.. So if you are making 10$$ an hour, working about 40 hours a week, could you survive in a rent $400 apartment a month, getting by with everything else???

yeah but life is going to SUCK. your rent should literally only take a third of what you make-TOPS.

Our rent takes up like 40% or more of what my fiance makes.

And we live just fine.

My rent is exactly one weeks pay, provided I work no overtime $1170. But that doesn't factor in my husbands income and he makes more than me. It'd be tight I think.

then you budget well....
personally i was always taught that in order to do more than just Get by your house payment/rent should only take up a third at most. it allows you to save for emergencies, enjoy luxuries when you want them AND keep necessities like an abundance of food or stay on top of bills... it keeps you less stressed IMO

We do budget well.

I'm taking up accounting in college, so I figured I'd better start handling the money. If I let him do it, we'd be up shits creek.

utilities/gas for us is always less than $300 and food is $200 max. Most months we have about $150 left over... it's tight, but we don't really mind it. When we have the baby we will go back to only paying $600/mth for the house. Plus we have savings if there is an emergency.
