NICU nurse vent

posted 1st Jul
Last night, we were in the NICU and my husband was holding Anya, well she had fallen asleep, and all of a sudden all her alarms start going off, she is in the 30s with her oxygen sats, she has fallen below 100 with her heartrate, and her nurse is on the fucking phone on a personal phone call, ignoring the alarms, the phone she was on was right next to the bedspace where Anya is, she would have had to be fucking deaf to not hear the alarms, I had to go grab another nurse. Her heartrate did come back up on its own, but she needed some help getting her oxygen sats back up. I was so pissed, and I reported her to the head nurse. I am still so pissed off, but I just got off the phone with her day nurse, and I told her what happened, and she read all the notes from last night, no more episodes like that and she has had a good day so far.

*hugs* I know exactly how you feel mama! Some of those nurses in the NICU act so nasty, and like they just don't care. As soon as your baby's alarms went off, she should have been right there, monitoring the situation instead of yacking her jaws off on the phone! I'm glad you reported that nurse! I was there so much with Miracle, that I knew what each alarm meant, and I knew what to do for every alarm that went off. I used to stay at the NICU for 13-14 hours at a time, go home, eat quickly, take a shower, and go right back up there for another 13-14 hours. *hugs* I'm here for you if you need someone to listen mama!

I would have taken the phone and hit her over the head with it. Sorry but I would be crazy! Atleast she is ok and nothing horrible happened because some chatter box didn't pay attention.

I have had similiar experiences with my lo in the NICU. I almost think the nurses get so used to hearing the alarms that they ignore or tune them out. I am glad your baby is ok.

You're a lot better person than I am, I can say that for sure!

Shoot...I don't blame you for being pissed at all. I am sure that every second that lady spent ignoring the alarms felt like an hour to yall.

It did, I only let it go for a couple seconds though before I got another nurse. I usually call and check up on Anya, but I don't want to talk to the nurse, who is the same one as last night, but the head nurse is making sure her nurse does her job.

I had a bad experience as well with a NICU nurse when my twins were in the NICU. One day I went in and there was a new nurse in there that I had never seen before (my twins were in the NICU for 26 days so I knew practically every single nurse back there) and she was assigned to my twins for the day. Well all was fine until my son needed a diaper change, she wouldnt let me do it which was weird to me because all the other NICU nurses had let me do it before whenever I was there, but i brushed it off and when she changed his diaper, she didnt even use a baby wipe on him at all! She just took his old diaper off and put a new diaper on him. OMG I got so mad! I didnt say anything to her, which was a mistake because I should have. About an hour later my son started crying and I couldnt get him to calm down so she came over and was trying to calm him down and she was looking for his binkie and finally she found it on the floor where it had fallin out of his crib, she just picked it right up off the floor and stuck in right into his mouth without even so much as wiping it off with a wipe first or anything! That done it...I was furious and I turned into one major BIOTCH! I flipped out on her and turned her into the head nurse and believe it or not, another nurse had saw what she had done and was a witness and this nurse ended up getting fired! GOOD!

Wow, good thing she got fired, im sorry you had to deal with that, I would have freaked too.
I did finally bite the bullet last night and called and im glad I did, her nurse was not the incompetent one, my husband had bitched about her being Anya's nurse again, so I guess that is what made them change her nurse.

Hey tara. I know how you feel. My son was a similar situation when he was in the NICU a couple of years ago.She was on the computer checking her mail and one of my sonsmain nurses from another POD had to come help.I did the same thing, reported her, and she didn't get to take care of him again.
