re: How to choose a baby name

posted 30th Jun '12

Yeah, I dont understand why people get so outraged...you don't have to agree with people but do try and keep your cool, right?
We have not officially decided on a name yet but the lead runner at the moment is Bianca Beth. Before I became pregnant, when I was bored, I would get out the books and scour them for names and come up with ones I liked. Now that the time is here I can't seem to make my mind up at all. Honestly though I doubt I will offically decide until I am holding her in my arms.
I see you are trying to get pregnant, do you have any names in mind for your future child?

My husband and I agree on:

Norah
Noelle
Lily
Eleanor(a)--I'm on the fence with this one
Ziva

Henry
Finn
Evander
Sebastien/Sebastian

I also like Leo/Leonidas, Oliver, Lucy, Lucian.

Well... i can imagine why some people would get worked up about this... the first comment i read on this post was very offensive... to all of the people with the names that were mentioned, and of course it also came off extremely racist. However, yelling at someone over comments wont do any good so you may aswell post your opinion and move on with out the drama.

In my opinion if someone is truly fraid of picking a name they like because of what people might call them in school give them one unique name and one that is easily pronounced. That way when they get to the where they want to decide what to go by they have a choice. My sister named her son tobias jacob... which honestly its not a strange name its just not common around here. This gives him the chance when he starts going to school to either be different orblend a little, whatever his suits his personality.

I named my daughter julie may and both of those names are pretty normal i think, however, i dont know many girls named julie around here and definately no one children under 5 (mainly becasue people are coming up with new unique names) and may is my cute little name for her. Ithink coming up with unique names is good, it gives people who want a semi normal name a chance to name their kids something traditional thats not being over used. I do find it wierd that someone would take a name like ashley and turn it into azjeliegh (not kidding i know someone named this) however she changed her name to that so its her deal, and if a parent doesnt like the spelling of a name they should feel free to make it what they want... i think its a little mean to make it hard for children to spell and read... but if its what makes it pretty to you then its the right name.

I think naming a child something unique JUST for the sake of uniqueness is stupid. A name also should come with a wonderful meaning...

My parents decided to give me a different spelling of a normal name. My name is pronounced Elizabeth but it is spelled Elyzabeth. From as far back as I can remember I have gotten - "How do you say that?", "Your name is spelled wrong", "Are you sure that is how you spell it?". I have also gotten more then enough of people saying my name wrong. I have like the idea of giving your child a name that is different then everyone else, I am naming my daughter Aveline (Ah-vuh-leen (its the old form of Evelyn)), Just if you are giving them a common name think of how people are going to say it. Ashlee and such variations are ok, just do not go too extreme lol

I like your list, and I know you said you are on the fence with Elenor(a) but you could always have the choice of some cute nicknames/shortnames for her like Ellie or Nora.

Yeah...don't use it.

I'm a fan of real names. There are plenty out there that are uncommon.

So would you pronounce the name like JD? It would be cute on a little girl but do keep in mind that when people hear it most will assume she is a little boy and probably spell it JD.
I would never say don't name your daughter that especially if you like it thats all that truly matters but do keep in mind that it will not always be convienent. I would probably go with Jade instead of Jaydee but thats just me.
You said you were on the fence about Jaydee, why?
What other names are you thinking of?
And if you really like it dont let our opinions deter you because it really only matters what you and your baby daddy think. I have told some people that the lead runner name for my baby is Bianca and I have recieved mixed reviews too, so not ever is everyone going to love your choices. So not matter what everyonelses preferences are just choose a name you LOVE. : )

hi ladies. i'm not pregnant yet but i had some name ideas. My daughter is named Olivia and i want something that fits perfectly with her name. My boyfriend is stuck on Zoey for a girl which i hate and anthony jr for a boy. i don't like either names and i can't come up with anything he might like, he doesn't like my names. So far i like Adele, Maia, Jade, Willa, Cohen, Quentin and Saul. Do any of those sound good with Olivia?

It seems both arguments hold much anger and a feeling of hatred. I understand both of your points, however, this is still an important part of your child's identity. Will your child like having a difficult time the first two years of learning how to spell and write her name--more so than the rest? Is it legitimately a boy's name through and through (androgynous names excluded)? You as a parent might enjoy coming up with the names, but the child him or her self comes first. Don't name your child some name he or she won't take pride in or love. I feel that is the most important of all.

Its nice that your baby boy will have a connection to family with his name without being the 2nd or something like that. Not that there is anything wrong with doing a junior or whatever, just less confusing. My exhusband's name was David as was his dad's but because they had different middle names he was not "junior". It was really confusing for me and his family bc his family called his dad David and called my ex chris eventhough he went by David everywhere else...it made some awkward moments when for a moment they would forget and think I was talking about his dad ; )
Is it just me or are lots of people real insensitive about the subject of names.... they ask you what you are naming your child and then criticize it is not very nice...actually can be pretty hurtful and rude depending on how it is done. Its a little different story if you ask someone their opinion of the names you have chosen but even then some people seem to really lack tack or politeness in giving their opions. Remember folks... pregnant women are hormonal in the first place, second we have probably put alot of thought into these name choices and LIKE/LOVE these names...if we ask your opinions please give them gently.
