If you didn't care, you wouldn't have gotten butt hurt about it. All I'm saying is, do your research. There are many, many beautiful, unused exotic beauties out there that get overlooked all of the time here in the states. Instead of randomly making something up, pick something that has a history, character, substance.....a MEANING. Kids ask all the time where their name comes from, you want to be able to give them a rich history and background and meaning, not, "oh, I made it up". Take my name for instance. It's Cassandra/ Not overly common, but heard of, definitely. But my name has a beautiful history in Greek Mythology, a cool meaning "Confuser of men" (lol) and I absolutely LOVED looking up info about the women who had my name before me.

Nolan is definitely not Asian, lol. It's an English surname. Don't believe everything you read on the interwebs, it can be deceiving. I actually quite like it. It's strong and uncommon, but not out there, it's a nice choice.

i agree my name is insanely common and i hate it and i to want to give my baby a unique uncommon name. although the name we are useing is farely common my boyfriend came up with the spelling ayjay for a.j. i would have loved to at least had a different spelling of my name so that when every one was like oh your name is brittany me to it wasnt spelled the same way so i at least felt like somewhat of an individual. dont let the satanic bitch bother you just read her name she is clearly just looking for attention. sad that her child has to be subjected to that, shes sure to breed a great functioning member of society until hes ten and then his head with probablly be so twisted he will take a gun to school and blows everyones brains out. so the judgement she is passing on you and your child shouldnt be taken into consideration. how does she know that your daughter wouldnt like to hear that her mom took the time to think of a name that she loved for her precious baby so it would be just hers and no one elses.... she doesnt and most of the rare names that are in the books but have remained unused have remained that way for a reason.

BWhahahaha, thats wonderful, dear. I'm now 100% positive that you know exactly 0% about satanism. Now, you can come back and talk shit once you educate yourself and drop this ignorant point of view you have. Not a functioning member of society, eh? Look, dear, I'm one of the most educated people on here. I adore education. I'm currently in college, graduate the middle of next year and then I'm going back to do it all over again. Then you will be able to call me Dr. Satanic Bitch because I'm getting my PhD in Linguistics and Cultural Anthropology, though I'm almost positive that you have no clue WHAT I'm talking about.

And when doing research on names, books are generally not a good idea. Most of them where published in the 80's and contain a great deal of crap. The internet is much nicer since it can cost nothing to publish stuff on a website, people can gather and share information and a good portion of the world has access. This being said, the internet is full of a bunch of bull most of the time as well. There are several things to look for when looking at a site that contains accurate information. One is if they cite their sources and another is if it is updated frequently, not just a list on a popular site that goes nowhere and always contains the same, random trendiness.

In conclusion, not all underused, uncommon names in books are crap. You can find everything in books from exotic gems like Kalila and Huyana to mythological beauties like Athena and Indira to Classical names from other countries like Elspeth, Cecily and Kerensa. Any of these listed (and many, many others) ooze class and sophistication and would make a lovely, uncommon choice for a child, but shows that the parent is educated and actually put thought into the naming process.

What I don't get is why a parent would give their child a name so far out there in its spelling that it sometimes doesn't even look like the name it's supposed to be.

Not to pick on the poster, but Rylei looks as if should be pronounce Rye-lay. I went to school with an Aryn, Aymee, and Nyki. Those are somewhat close to what they are supposed to be.

What's with the whole apostrophe thing? Azanay' Do I pronounce the apostrophe? Does the ' mean I shouldn't say the last syllable of the name?

It doesn't make the name unique. It will still be the same name, the parents will look retarded, and the child will be correcting people the rest of his or her life.

Ayden: am I saying I-den or Aiden? Brittnye--am I saying Brit-knee or Brit-nye?

Eyzik, Eryck, Eythan...the list goes on. Why not name him Zcqwertyiasdcerb and say it's pronounced Bob?

No offense, but damn.

So very, very true. Besides, the traditional spellings look so much nicer. They where spelled that way for a reason. I don't care what others say, it also looks illiterate, especially if the name completely defies the laws of phonetics.

I agree. It's one thing if in that culture the name has always been spelled a certain way, such as Viktor or Luca in an Eastern European country. But to spell it Vicktore or Luckah...

A lot of names have been Anglicized. So it would be one thing if you decided to give your a child a name from another country with its original spelling. That's cool. But to take a perfectly good name and butcher the hell out of it?

I think it's cool if a person happens to like a name of another origin. I don't think it's weird. I'm not Hawaiian but my middle name is Hawaiian because I was born there. My hubby and I have apparently decided on naming her Keolani if we have a girl.

But it's weird, whack, stupid, etc. to name your child Reebeckaah when you mean Rebecca.

Keolani is super pretty. Maybe you can answer a question thats been nagging at me. Are ALL Hawaiian names unisex?

Thank you.

Genuine names are unisex. Just as any Native American tribe, Hawaiians sometimes named their child after a dream or an event, and would sometimes be changed later in life. But as often happens with Western influence, the names seem to have become categorized as M or F or unisex.

Depending on the family, a child from Family A and a child from Family B would be named Hokulani, but it could have different meanings for each family. Here's a short but informational statement about Hawaiian names: http://hspls.org/hp/Bibliographies/hawnames.html

Valerie Keolani is my first and middle name. Keolani means heaven's continuation.

Ah, that makes more sense and goes more along the lines of what I had originally thought. Valerie Keolani is definitely a stunner!

Now now, don't inflate my head. There's enough air in there as it is.

My hubby's 1/4 Spanish so I'm thinking of Isabella in honor of my mom, Betty since Isabella is the Spanish version of Elizabeth and Betty is a diminutive of Elizabeth. But then her initials would be KIT.

His mom's name is Christy and I'm half German and the German equivalent of Christy is C/Karsten. It means christian or follower of Christ. Her middle name is Ann, so maybe another Spanish name? I like the name Analeigh.

As for boys, I wouldn't do a Hawaiian name. I like Ethan and William, but Ethan's uber popular and I hate the nicknames for William except the NN Princess Diana had for her son: Wills.

Or are we/me thinking too far ahead since we aren't even pregnant?
