I think that the most important factor in picking a name is that it goes with the last name. My last name is Malitz and my parents had a really hard time trying to get a name, but eventually they picked my name; Kirby. Even though my name is now a charcter is now a nintendo character and a vacuum cleaner brand and i'm commonly told its a boys name, I think that my name has to do alot with my personality. I was the only kirby at school and I thought that was pretty cool. Me personally though, I'm going to name my children after songs. My fiance have decided on the names Lindsay Rebecca for a girl (From the song "Lindsay Quit Lollygagging" by the band chiodos) and Kameron Alexander (This however, was the name of my fiances best friend that died last year, and we saw it as a way to honour him)

okay, so I need some name suggestions for boys and girls...a J name, an A name, an H name and a T name, an M name and a B name...long story. All gender suggestions welcome!  I really like Henry,Hayden, Tyler, Max and Aaron for boys, but I'd like some thoughts. And I have zero girls names.

wow. well. wow. i understand completely where the woman is coming from. i am from african-american descent and i did not get offended with the "african american" baby name bit. truthfully tho. naming your child "shaquila" "taquanika" (these are AUTHENTIC NAMES -- I actually know girls with these names) "aquanay" "dahnaqua" the list goes on. it is rediculous. stop it. stop it. stop it. please. stop it. truthfully, i believe the white woman when she says that having a ethnic name could prevent someone from getting a job. its a dead give-away of your race. there isn't any guessing with a name like "Latavia". Quite frankly, I think it's ghetto and if your child had the chance to choose their own name at birth i'm sure it sure as hell wouldn't be "LaQuisha". Then again--- whatever floats your boat. when naming your baby it's important to think about what you value most out of life. or maybe names that have meaning. i don't know but please quit with the ghetto baby names.

YES, it is GHETTO.

but thumbs down for the part where she says you can't trust a person with a ghetto name. i agree--that is just ignorance. kind of like naming your child "BonQuisha". What is that? "JazMonet" "Alize" "Chardonnay" "Hennessey". Let's be adults. Please.

I believe in having unique names. I don't want to name my child the #1 name from previos years becasue then everyone they know will be named that as well.
My name is Kandyce. Yes, spelled with a K and a Y. I have heard my whole life that it was beautiful and unique and my mom was great for changing it up. Yes is gets annoying having to spell it for people but you get used to it after so many years lol. I named my first child Kyra ( thats with a long I) People call her Kiera and such but I politely correct them. Some ppl have told me it should have been spelt with an I instead of a Y, but you know what? It's my kid and i think its cuter with a Y.

I havent read every reply on here but as far as the "African American" names go, my brother (we are white) is married to a mixed woman (black/white) Thye had a son and his name is D'metrius Devon. I think its a beautiful name to go with his personality, they didn't pick it just becasue he was gonna be black. Which in case your wondering, he is a pretty white little boy

I am pregany atm with my second child. If it is a boy we are going to name him Jude Aiden. Now technically Jude is a unisex name, but to me its a boy name. Me personally, I don't go for names that are seriously unisex i.e. Tony/Toni, Ashley, Kelly etc. I like one sex or the other for names. I know Jude is supposed to be unisex but I jsut can't imagine a girl with the name of Jude. I'm sure I will get corrected on this one for one reason or another but that's just my opinion.
We haven't picked another name for a girl, having a problem trying to find a good name. My husband and I both like names that can't be shortened. Yes my name can be shortened but I never let anyone call me Candy, not even my husband. So if anyone has sugegstions for good names that aren't super popular, can't be shortened and meant for a girl please post them

If you and your significant other have chosen a name and love it, keep it. My friends and mother in law are constantly trying to push names on me that i hate. My boyfriends name is Gregory George, his fathers name is Gregory, they want me to name my first son Gregory Robert...no. Family names are something i cant stand, they are unoriginal and plain...plus very confusing. I dont want to be at a family pick nick and call for Greg and have all three come running.
Also, i went to school with 50 Amanda's, Ashley's and Jennifer's, so i know those names wouldn't be right from my child. And please think before you name, i would hate to be a boy and have a girl name because my mother was high on hormones and thought it was cute. This name will shape a person for the rest of their lives so chances are if you name your son Clancey, hes going to be stuffed into lockers all through high school. The options are endless....so think.

Honestly, while your post *may* have some truth to it, to categorize these "unique" names as "African-American" is quite ignorant.

I'm African-American. My family has a mix of ordinary names (James,Mary, and Walter just to name a few)while some of my relatives have unique names. I have a very original name, and I love it! People of all backgrounds give me compliments about the beauty of it. Sure, VERY few people have pronounced my name correctly the first time. I used to get annoyed (still cringe sometimes), but I've gotten used to it.

Just a year ago I went to Cancun, Mexico and while crossing the boarder, a Mexican guard looked at my pass port and pronounced it correctly with NO problem. I'll never forget that!

So having a unique (NOT ghetto or out-of-control "DeLaTonka" or whatever name you made up) can be awesome. I love it. In my graduating class alone there are MANY Sarahs (Sarah A. Sarah B. Sara L. Sarah S.), 2 Hannahs, 2 Clares (Claire and Clare), and God knows HOW many "Katies". I stand out. I like being an individual.

And on another note: if I were you, I would do some research about "African-American" names before judging them. At one point, blacks were stripped of their African identity, from their names and heritage to their language and many slaves were forced to adapt a new, European-originated name. Such recently (maybe 20 or so years) have AAs decided to reach back into their ancestral roots and reclaim their African heritage and one of these ways was/is via "unique" or "ethnic sounding" names.

My opinion on giving a girl a boys name is I will not do it. If i am having a girl, i want a girl name. This has been a problem since hubby isnt in to picking names yet and the two he has contributed are Taylor and Avery, both boy names IMO. And I refuse to give my lil girl a boy name. But I also think to each mommy her own. If thats what you like go for it. My nieces is Charlie and she is adorable and the name fits, but I happen to hate them. I also have a cousin named Peyton (female), but know a 3 yr old named Bailey, and i think this is a femine name extremely. But the most Important thing is to name your child what YOU like.

I not actually expecting because I would like to finish college first and My SO and I get settled but this topic interested me significantly. I am from Alabama and my whole family has Indian blood in them. my great grandmother was a full blooded Cherokee Indian. Her name was Teresa LaVone. My mother was partially named after her. My mother's name is Tajawnna LaTeresa, Tajawanna(pronounced tuh-wanna.) means beautiful sunrise in Indian. LaTeresa La taken from LaVone and Teresa from the first name. And she is trusted just fine in her highly ranked law firm. Her name in no way hindered her in the career opportunities. My name is Ashley Nichole. Ashley after my mothers favorite movie Gone with the Wind where the lead MALE role's name was Ashley. Nichole spelled with an "H" although I do get alot of Nicole's when others try to spell it. It doesnt bother me at all i simply apply the "h" it may just be in my community but I've always been asked how do you spell it? I have no problem explaining it. I am also partially Italian and If i ever have a litte girl i would name her bellah sara meaning beautiful sunrise in italian. after my mother. I think the First reply to this article was appauling' arrogant; biased; closed minded. It is so very racist; sexist and uneccesarry that you think that people who want originality, creativity and unique-ness for their children are burdening their children. Although my name is very common (obviously) my best friends name is also AShley Nicole without the "h" our family and friends call us ash(her) and me; ley. like lee. to disfuse the confusion. a anme is a reflection of someones beliefs personality and dreams. who are you to critisize this?
