re: How to choose a baby name

posted 9th Sep
My mother named me Jenna-Marie Lynn, and that's kind of a long name, and it's pretty simple, and I was never really picked on. On the other hand, I hated my name up until I was seventeen. I always went by Jenna, because Jenna-Marie was too long. But I was the only Jenna in all of my schools. I didn't meet another girl named Jenna til I was in college. I love my name now. Even though Jenna Marie and Jenna Lynn are fairly common, nobody else is Jenna-Marie Lynn. The only annoying thing is that my license and such display my name as Jenna Marie L, and my car insurance says Jenna Mariel. I plan on giving my children unique names, nothing too crazy. Iwantmy firstborn to be a girl, and I want to name her Kirjen (pronounced Kirhen, but not a heavy HEN). It's a name I made up, becuase I want my little girl to stand out in a sublte way, just the way I did. And I figure if she doesn't like it, we can always call her Kira or Jen (not pronounced as hen). All parents worry about their child being made fun of and teased, but it's going to happen, no matter what the name is.

Well my parents named me Curtissa. My dad's name is Curtis and when they found out I wasn't a boy, my mom just added an s-a to the end. I never got made fun of for my first name, but got heck for my middle names which are fairly eurocentric: Veta Eugenia. Kids would call me Velveeta after the cheese and Eugene instead of Eugenia in reference to the geeky kid who got punched in the face every day on the cartoon Hey Arnold. So I say if its a weird spelling or outlandish name, go for it because it adds that extra uniqueness to the identity of your child. Plus, kids will have to get a little more clever when making fun of them!

I would like to add that you have to be able to yell the name. My mom used to stand at the top of the stairs and yell as loud as she could and as mad as she could to try to pick a name because if you can't yell it what are you going to do when they're a teen and they take the car without permission? Thats just my perspective.

I agree with you keikie! I am 100% "caucasian... and if any family has out of the ordinary names... it would be mine! Examples: My great grandfathers name was Tanzy (and a cousin named Tangey). I have a grandmother named Wondell and a great grandmother named Birdie. I have an uncle named Simmeron. My dads mom names was Nathaline... a mix between natalie and kathleen. also a grandfather with the first name of strickland. I have cousins named Tangey, Helsa, Sumer, Brianka, and Azaela.

Lol..I have the most boring plain name ever... Amy Rose... and my last name is very common too... I wish my parents would've had a little bit more creative with my name.... espically since my last name is so common!
If I have a girl I like the name Kaydence or Serenity.

So what do you do when you can stop crying over picking names. The father has a child from hid previous marriage, and he picked her name. And now it's my turn. Anything I like he hates, and vise versa. I have been crying for nearly two hours. My babies name means a lot to me. And tell me how this sounds. I feel like if i dont like the name of my child, i wont feel that soecial bond/closeness with him or her. I know it sounds crazy but im terrified thats how i'll feel. I want to name it!!!!!!!

I do have to start off by saying... I am a female, the ONLY female I know, named Spencer... It was hell for me... I was the youngest of four and the only girl... and all through 3rd to 8th grade, I was the only girl in ALL my classes... But then again... I am starting to like Ryan for a girl... Mind you, that name was a VERY popular girl name back in the day... I am part black, part Cuban, and a whole lot of white mutt... I would never use an ethnic name for my child... Everyone has the right to name their child what they want... If you choose something for a reason and it's not quite "in" it'll be your kid coming to you 20+ years down the road thanking you for their unique name... As hard as it sometimes was to be Spencer, I would HATE being named my parent's alternatives, IE: Michelle, Stacy, Kelly... So common! Just make sure your baby can spell their own name before starting school... Trust me, it'll be SO hilarious when the teacher tries to count them wrong for their name.... then you let 'em know the school got it wrong... "What?! You can't even get my kid's name right?! Now who let you teach here?!"

I would like to comment ont the whole boy names for girls. My 4th daughter is named Jordan and we just love it and it fits her well. The second I saw her after she was born I said she is a Jordan! She is beautiful and I could never see her with any other name. All my beautiful daughters have unique names that we love very much and it really fits them all so perfectly! Go with what you feel in your heart.

Hey, hey, the name ashley is ok. So there was 6 of us in each class, and it wasnt always easy, but it made us all have to stand out in our own ways. you can go unique with a unique or uncommon name, which is awesome. and even if you name your kid ashley or something overly popular, as long as you love it and give them all the love in the world, THEY will make the name their own no matter what it is!!!. any name that you name your baby is perfect. dont let other people judge it. this whole post is almost silly, no one should be ragging on what someone wants to name their baby. c'mon women!!!! =o)
