You think Mara is ignorant???

Well, I don't think anyone is really going to get anywhere with this. The hubby to be and I had names picked out before we got pregnant, even though we weren't planning on having kids for a while... SURPRISE! But anyways, The two top names we had for our first boy and first girl are Ethan Allen, and Elise Andrea. Now as most of you probably know Ethan Allen is a furniture store in the USA. WHO CARES!? It has a really nice ring to it and flows perfectly with the last name it will have. I have also heard that you shouldn't give your kids the same initials. I doubt very much that people are REALLLYYY going to stop and think about that. Besides, how many times have any of you introduced yourself with your FULL name, and how many people are going to stop and think, hey wait a minute, she has the same initials as her brother/sister. So, as a million and ten other people have said. Let it be up to the parents, and just think if the kid hates their name they will blame the parents, not you!

Ethan Allen
That's funny! If it was his first and last name it would be weird, but I think it's fine for a middle name.

So what do you think about Ethan Michael for a boy or Camilla Rose for a girl?? I want something kinda old fashioned and yet still nice. Since my fiance's last name is a mouthful I want something easier to spell for the first name.
I do agree about the spelling of the name, nothing weird. My sister named her daughter Avrie(avery) and no one can ever pronounce it right, poor girl...Keep in mind your child's gonna have to learn to say and spell this name, so parents be nice!

the comment about ashley originialy being a boys name, hello people she didnt name herself and isnt that what we are on here talkinga about in the first place, trying to name our child so people wont make fun of them?

We've decided that if it's a girl, I get to pick the first and he gets to pick the middle name. If it's a boy, the opposite. We've settled on a girl's name, but the boy name is giving us trouble.
Here's the problem: He's German. We need a name that works both in America and in Germany, because the kid will be raised in both countries. He doesn't understand that Richard gets shortened to Dick here. And that's not okay!! The other names are just as bad.
The only name he's suggested that doesn't make me want to rip my hair out is Bjoern. Except it's really Bjorn with an umlaut (two little dots) above the O. This name is completely normal in Germany (and I knew a really wonderful Bjoern when I lived there) but I wonder how the kid would fare in America with it. Will employers take one look and laugh, or think he's the brilliant, bilingual, multi-cultural person he'll be (Oh, I am a little biased already )? Will kids make fun of him? Bullying will likely be no problem, he's destined to be the biggest kid in his class. I would really appreciate some input.
For the record, I'm not a big fan of people using cultural names when they have none of that culture in their ancestry. This kid is going to be German, grow in up in Germany, speaking the German language.

Jennifer and Thomas - My parents gave my brother and I different initials and the reasoning behind it for my mother was brilliant. Imagine the *hundreds* of different things from art class you'll accumulate over the years. In 10, 20 years you won't remember who made that charmingly ugly coil pot in 3rd grade if the initials are the same.
I think an easy way to get around this is to take a sharpie to the back/bottom of it as soon as each child brings it home. For your boy, it gets a little star. For a girl, it gets a little smiley face or something.

I agree with Karlyliz about using cultural names as long as their part of the ancestry, my trouble is my fiance is Greek and his last name is Thanasulas, I've had no such luck finding another Greek name that'll go so well with it...
Any suggestions would be appreciated!

What about the lots and lots of names that only have Greek origin like Andrew? It doesn't need to be Andrenopolis or whatever the original name was

What I tried to do with my current children is to remember that I'm naming a future adult, not "just a baby/kid/teen" and that they will be a grown man/woman for the longest part of their life and to give them a name that they will grow into as they age, rather, then give them a name that is "younger" sounding for them to get used to as they age. That is just my personal preference of course.

Im just going to wait for them to come out, and what ever suites them best is what they get

Wow okay so I just stopped liking Jordin. I really loved that name as a middle name for a girl. But that story has completely changed my mind. Thanks!!!

There are A LOT of guys named bjorn here......minnesota rates the highest for scandinavian populations....the name is also norwegian/swedish and was one that we had considered as well.....you were talking about an employer looking at the name and possibly laughing?.....think about this......people will REMEMBER his name and he will STICK OUT because of it....that is a great great thing......it is definitely a good choice!
