re: How to choose a baby name
posted 26th May
If a kid is going to get teased - the kids going to get teased. You can make something mean or funny out of almost any name...school kids are ruthless!
You should name your baby whatever you deem fit...it's your baby!

Ok here it is, I have been reading all this about how to chose a baby nam and what not and I saw what Specs or whatever her name is wrote and it bugged me as well. First and foremost, I am NOT expecting and do not plan to have a child yet. But my husband and I have always thought about what we would like to name our kids, I haven't really thought of girl names, but the boy names that we have come up with, are Jace Adam, and Tripp Allan. I have talked to several friends about these names most of them don't like the the nme Tripp. But in all honesty I really don't care my husband and i like these names and we want to use them, and that is all that matters. As for my friends not liking the names that is actually a relief because one of them already stole one that we had picked out before. What sucked is she said "Well ya'll aren't planning on having a child any time soon so you can think of another one"!!! Yea I was pretty pissed!! Well that is all I have to say So SEE YA. And Happy Hunting!

Well, this is a very interesting thread.
First off, I am totally against making a "unique" spelling on any name. Maybe it's because I'm just an English (and phonics?!) nerd, but that just bugs the living daylights out of me when someone is named Kristynah instead of just Christina. Your poor kid.
Also, I REALLY disagree with everyone bashing "normal" or "common" named. My name is Sarah Elizabeth. I was named after my grandmother. I don't particularly like my grandmother, but I still think my name is beautiful. My Mom though her Mom's name was beautiful, so she just decided upon it.
Sure, I had 3 or 4 other Sarah's in my classes as a kid. Mysteriously, in college, I hardly meet any. I think it is strange to spell Sarah without the "h" (Sara) and it bugs me to have to tell people that my name HAS an "h."
Sarah is a nice name that doesn't have any crazy nicknames either, I saw someone asking that =]
Anyway, to each their own. Honestly, I will name my child something normal and classic since they will be going to school with a bunch of Shenaynays, Rionns, Satanas, and Rileis. Benjamin or Emma is going to be the OPPOSITE of common. Many of you should consider that. 5 years ago, Jayden was an cool and unusual name...now? Your kid will have 5 Jayden's in their class.
I don't mind naming a girl Jordan. But a boy named Ashley or Sharon? How I
emasculating.
I think that everyone SHOULD pick a name that is special, beautful, and meaningful to them and their partner. But please be considerate of your child...would you want to be a little girl named Sierra Neveda Carmen Ruella Smith?
I put a ton of thought into my (one day) baby boy's name. Benjamin Joshua. Benjamin is a great LIFELONG name...baby Ben, 5th grader Ben, Mr. Benjamin J. Mc-------, old man Ben. Joshua is my boyfriend's name. I just hope no one calls him BJ =]
I just really needed to get all of that off my chest!!

Quoting God: When picking a baby name, the most important thing to remember is that no matter what YOU think, it's ... [snip!] ... to think more about whether or not their child will appreciate the name instead of just how super cute they think it is. C
Actually, yeah, if you name your child Mary these days it would probably be considered unique. Madisyn, Braden, etc (the new names) have been used so much that Jessica,Michael,Jennifer are actually very rare now.

I am almost 24 weeks pregnant... I'm not sure on the sex of the baby yet since I recently changed doctors and haven't been able to get into the new one yet. But the names I have picked out are Ayden Andrew Ray for a boy and Skyelar Caroline Raye for a girl. I've had a few people ask me where the names came from. Ayden is just a name that popped out at me while I was looking through a baby book. Andrew is the father's middle name and Ray is my Maternal Grandfather's first name. Skyelar is a name that I've liked for years, Caroline is my Maternal Grandmother's middle name and I don't need to explain Raye again. My baby will be the 8th or 9th Ray in the family. I've always been against my family names just because we have so many Ray's. But, when I became pregnant, I decided I'd want t continue my Grandfather's name.

First off Specs06 you need to get a life. What do you mean a literate and educated member of your family? Are you implying that people that name thier children with a unique name or spelling are uneducated? I happen to know doctors, lawyers and one rocket scientist that have named thier children unique names. Enough about you cause you my dear are the ignorant one which was proved by that comment. LOL all this is very funny.Everyone's view on naming is so different and unique to themselves. I say name your child what you like because people will tease no matter what. When you see your baby you will know if the name you prepared isright for them.We are a world full of different people in many ways. That's what makes the world go round. I happen to have a rather common name with a different spelling and I don't mind when people mispronunciate it or mispell it. I know it's different. I do have to spell it all the time which is what you have to weigh ( important or not) for yourself. I am not scary but because of a wrestlerI was called scary Cherrie in school. That's a regular part of growing up (being teased). Personally I think if you go with aunique name for the first name give them a more common middle name or viced versa if the child later feels that he/she would rather go by a different name he/ she has an option.

If I have a boy I want to name him Jacoby. It's not very unique but I just love the name. Now for the girl I haven't thought of anything just yet..which who knows if I'll even stick with Jacoby. I'm only 3 months and my mind can change.

i thought reading these posts would help me, but I think they have confused me more than anything! My husband and I liked the name Dylan originally for a girl...but the more I think about it, I am afraid to name her that because I dont want her to be picked on. I was heavy and picked on all through school and I just dont want her to have my build plus a boys name-2 things for kids to use to pick on her! But at the same time, reading these made me realize, no matter what I name her, kids are always going to be cruel...but then again, why give them a reason? I AM SO CONFUSED!!!!

Quoting Air: I have to DISAGREE!!! Frankly I have to say this is only my opinion as much as what you said was only ... [snip!] ... ASH if ASHLEY IS YOUR NAME ( WHICH I'M GUESSING IT IS ) ASHLEY STARTED AS A BOY'S NAME BEFORE IT WAS EVER A GIRLS!!!!!!!
You took the words out of my mouth when i was reading this

I just posted a new topic about the worst names before I read this thread.
I found the OP to be very ignorant. A kid will be teased no matter what. However, an example I used in the post I just made is that sometimes it seems that parents aren't thinking when naming their children. Example:
My friend teaches a girl named Shithead. (pronounced Shi theed)
I'm thinking her parents didn't like her very much and that girl can't possiblybe taken serious when she's older. What if she wants to be a doctor? I can honestly say I wouldn't go to a doctor named Shithead.

Quoting missa1705: i am naming my baby jordan lee, whether its a boy or a girl after my best friend. and its a unisex name, ... [snip!] ... wrong with being creative with spelling either, at least i dont think so. i have often wished my name was a little more unique.
this is really cool..my aunt said the same thing when she was pregnant for my cousin..so when my cousin ended up being a girl, she just changed the spelling from jordan lee to jordanne leigh

I wanted to let everyone in on a little secret that I figured out that I think is really neat, I have a LOT of pregnant friends, some of them with minds made up already, but I still am trying to tell everyone and get the word out. So this is it, first name let's say you like... Samuel, okay his first name ends with the letter, "L", so his middle name should start with the letter "L", I am NOT telling you how to name your child, I am simply saying, think of a name that starts with the last letter of the first name, and then put it all together with the child's future last name, Also if you have like "Sarah" with the end of that name, all you hear is "ah", so start the middle name with an "A", or another "ah" name that starts with "ah".Thus the reason Sarah Elizabeth flows so well. Here....say these names out loud and tell methey don't flow smoothly off of your tongue...
Boys:
-Samuel Liam Baressi
-Landon Nicholas Lamont
-Carter Riley Downey
-Noah Alexander Malstrom
-Rowan Nevin Phillips
Girls:
-Sarah Elizabeth Fenton
-Adynn Nicole McAllister
-Brynn Natalie Jones
-Cadence Cierra Matherson(it ended in "sss" sound so I started the middle name with "sss" sound)
-Jennifer Renne Smith
So if no one reading this understands and thinks I am crazy I understand, but if it helps ONE person come up with a middle name that they really like, I hope this trick helps you out like it did me!!! Good Luck to all, and remember, it's you're child, and this is YOUR time to name them, don't let ANYONE take that away from you!!!

ummm ooohhkay girl. Seems like your just trying to look cool by doing the opposite of everyone else because you're purposely all for the "popular" naming and spelling. I think people should name they're child however they want to name it. And its not always about "ohhh lets name the baby something original" its about what THEY like and catches they're ear. quoteposted 1st Jul
