Well, I don't know to much about the history of Honduras' deomocracy, nor do I know much about this leader that was overthrown.
If what I'm understanding is that this president who was removed pulled some sort of bait and switch, then I would have to agree with the people and military of Honduras. It sounds like yes, he was elected democratically, but then started blatantly abusing power and employing corrupt methods for his own gains. I know there is supposed to be democratic policy in place for these kinds of situations, but let's face it, those don't always work in favor of the people. If he was aiming for some kind of dictatorship, I completely understand why they staged a coup.
So, I can't say I fully agree with Obama on this, because while the Honduras president was elected democratically, there was a clear abuse of power going on. I don't think we can condone governments worldwide who are blindsiding their citizens while steamrolling through a communist or dictatorial agenda.

Ok, sorry I'm late on this...

If I am understanding the situation correctly, I have no idea why Obama would side with Zelaya.

He was breaking the law. He was trying to change the constitution so he could remain in power even though his time was up. The military was ordered by the Supreme Court to remove him, backed by the attorney general and congress.

What ground is Zelaya even standing on that he thinks he can become an overnight dictator and change the country's constitution with his illegal power grab?

As I understand it, he wanted to change the constitution so that he could stay in power. Such a change has to be approved by their congress but Zelaya decided that he didn't need their approval.

I can only hope that if Obama started trying to do things against our constitution while Americans, the Supreme Court and Congress are collectively saying, "No way," that we would do something about it.

Honestly, it's a little scary that Obama is siding with the dictators on this one.

I wish more people had responded to this post.

I was fascinated by it when I was reading about it the other night.

Yeah. Kind of sad that it didn't get much news coverage.

I go to Foxnews.com, pretty much the only place online that still talk about it. Former pres Zelaya tried to land today, and the current pres denied it. he is standing his ground. I am soo annoyed the the OAS thinks that they even have power, with treats. And technically, it was not a coup, because it was legal. Every one is getting this wrong.

It took me forever to find articles to read up on it. I kept asking my husband, "Do you understand what's going on in Honduras"?

I'm glad the new guy is standing his ground. A coup doesn't necessarily have to be illegal though, right?

well, i thought if they ousted him illegally; not the way they did it, through congress and what not, then it would be defined as a coup. So ,therefore, it is not a coup but the US Government is saying it is an illegal coup, kinda an oxymoron. They are trying to confuse people to believe what they want us to believe IMO

My boyfriend is from Honduras and most of his family is still there.I think they set a good example too, but I know my boyfriend has been following it nonstop and hes very worried. He spoke to his mom the other day who said that things are really, really out of control and shes pretty scared.

my SIL's husband is from Honduras as well. I am worried as too. I think it is scary when a country that is doing something right and lawful for their citizens, is so alone and without support.
