You should mention to her that there are zero documented cases of a RF child breaking a leg in a car accident, but plenty documented cases of a FF child's skull detaching from his or her spinal cord

So... I'm hoping to use this thread as a lesson. What does "ERF" mean?
I turned Kaiden to front facing as soon as he hit 20 pounds and a year old. I had no idea that it was such a bad idea... so I suppose I should turn him back around? It's been over a month. He's not going to be happy haha.

ERF stands for extended rear facing.

And of course it is your choice whether you want to do that   legally, he is fine being forward facing. Although, it is safer to be rear facing.

You could always give it a shot and see if it bothers him? 4444 doesn't mind being rear facing at all! Although, he has never been forward facing so he really has nothing to compare it to.

And, I'm pretty sure this has probably been posted already in this thread, but in case you missed it, here's a short video that really drives home the importance of rear facing when they're small

One of the main reasons (besides what I've learned from BG) that I have chosen to leave my son rear facing is the stories I have heard from my dad of infants he has treated whose skulls have literally detached from their spinal cords because of car accidents while forward facing. He has seen it firsthand, and it's very sad.

If it weren't for their skin, their heads would fall off

Such a scary, scary image!

I posted that video on my facebook right after a girl posted her 8 month old foward facing. Like they were sidebyside in the newsfeed. She never said anything, nor did she change him around.

Although, the video has got ONE person to change her daughter back to rearfacing. I was really happy I made an impact on someone!

That's wonderful.   Do you have a mirror in your car? So the kiddo can see you and himself in it? Tristan loves his mirror. We play peekaboo in it haha

He doesn't mind being rearfacing. But he's never been forward facing. Hope it goes well for you

I don't have one but I can sure get one. It'll be way cheaper than what would be weighing on me if that happened to Kaiden... what's in that video, I mean.   I'm heartbroken now that I've had him in such danger completely unknowingly!

It's okay   You didn't know. Just be happy that nothing ever happened! You are doing something about it now!

That's the one advantage to being forward facing, you can see your child easier. But of course it's not enough to turn 4444 around to me, since you can use mirrors   and I can actually just peek over his carseat and see him (I'm pretty tall) so we're good there.

A friend of mine's daughter actually almost died because she pulled one of those tiny clippies out of her hair and put it in her mouth, and choked on it. She was rear facing and my friend couldn't see her, but she got too quiet and the passenger looked back and saw her lips were blue. They pulled over in the middle of a busy intersection   and an employee from a nearby store was able to give her the maneuver-formerly-known-as-the-Heimlich (lol). So she was okay.. but she turned her around to forward-facing after that. And won't use any more clippies in her hair. But she had hit the legal requirements to be forward facing, anyway.

I'm glad I have a boy

Yes, totally

but of course, a mirror would have done just as much good as her being FF in that situation. So it's not a good enough reason to me to turn a child around
