Fussy Preemie

posted 26th Jun
So my son, who was born at 29 weeks and will be 4 months old on July 1st, has been super fussy for the past week or so and he'll go in out of these fussy phases. My sister works with a lady who also had a preemie and she said her daughter went through a stage at around 4 months where she was fussy for a whole month. He also goes through phases where he will BF for about 3 days in a row, then he will refuse to BF and only take bottles, but even when I try to give him a bottle he puts up a fight. He won't let me put him down and it seems like he always wants to eat. My sister's coworker told her that when she switched her daughter to formula "the heavens opened up". I REALLY can't tell you how much I do not want to give my son formula and how badly I want to EBF. So right now formula is not an option to me. I'm just curious to know if any other preemie moms...or mom of full term babies even...have gone through something similar with a fussy baby? Did anyone else have to switch their baby from BM to formula? I just can't believe that there would actually be a time where formula would be better for my baby than BM. I am desperate for help!

Maybe it's gas, try mylicon gas drops before feeding him.

I have had to start my LO on a bottle, or binkie, and then switch to the breast a few times when she was super fussy. Worked like a charm.

My son is the same age (4mo on the 18th) and just started to be more and more fussy. He is exclusively formula fed...so I'm not sure of a reason. But it stinks!! He seems to want to eat 24/7. Do they have a growth spurt during this time?

I was thinking maybe he was having a growth spurt, but the more research I've done I think my son may actually have reflux...he has almost all of the symptoms. I don't know if your son is having any other symptoms besides being fussy but you may want to google infant reflux and see if maybe that is why your son is fussy as well? My son has an appointment next week so I guess we'll see if that is his problem or not!

My little girl has reflux and it sounds like your son might too. She was dianosed at 4 months with it. Hope you find something that works. She gets previcid in the morning and they have me add 1 tsp oatmeal to every ounce

Did you notice a big change once you started her on the meds?

My son was almost 4 weeks early and was a quiet baby for about 2 weeks...then became very fussy....He wouldn't take the breast milk if I tried to feed him on myself...but would take the bottle with the milk. I think his mouth was too small and he couldn't latch right, not to mention I was producing hardly anything. He has been really fussy and wouldn't take his bottle or eat a little bit, cry and go back to sleep. We recently found out he has to have Similac Isomil....Since he has been on that...A COMPLETE 360....Sleeps through the night, 10 times happier, and finishes every bottle...

I think your little one being fussy has something to do with him being early....Like their body wasn't ready to start bottles or BF and it's just taking so getting used to...

that is EXACTLY how kamari is. if i hold him the whole day he is fine, but the minute i want to shower, or make something to eat, or clean he freaks out and then it takes forever to calm him back down. i really think he may have reflux, have you read the symptoms of it?? he fits almost every one. keep me update on your daughter and let me know of any tips or tricks you use!

He is still fussy, i have to hold him and rock him and pat him on the butt to calm him down until he falls asleep, and then if i am lucky i can put him down for a little bit. I take him to the doctor's on friday, so maybe we can find out then what's wrong. I'll let you know what the doctor says!
