not wanting to sit...at all

posted 25th Jun
My son was born at 32 weeks 5 days. He is now 6 1/2 months about 5 months adjusted. Ok so about a month ago we had a physical therapy appointment and he did great. Followed toys great, showed great neck muscles and what not. The only thing is that i had to work on was his stomach muscles He wasn't showing any sign of sitting on his own. They understood cause hes a preemie. So a month later ive been trying to get tummy time in and hes ok with it for about 5 minutes then gets frustrated. I try a few times a day. I also take his hands and help him sit up and he likes it I make it a little game(on a good day). But it seem that recently every time i try and have him sit in my lap or just sit in general he scoots his butt out so he lays down.

Now i know every baby is different but im wondering if weight has to do with the ability to sit on their own. My son is only 13 lbs right now.

So my question is how much did your LOs weigh when they started sitting up. Im starting to think im trying to make him sit up way before hes ready and im only hurting his development. Im going to call the pedi and see what he thinks i just want your opinions.

Thanks in advance.

I don't think weight has any part of it.. I mean, my LO is almost 5 month, she doesn't sit on her own yet and she's 16lbs. I know another woman who's LO is about 6.5 months, sitting and only 13-14 lbs...

My son is about 15-15.5 lbs. and sitting supported.

I think Mason is just not ready yet, though, and with his adjusted age I'm not really surprised. My son didn't start until recently (he's 6 months and a week), and that was just pulling himself forward to grab something when he was sitting with his back against something (ie. next to me on the couch). I saw a thread on here recently about late sitters--kids who didn't sit unsupported until 8 months or so.

Are your docs pushing you to work with him or something? Because honestly it doesn't sound like he's "late" to me.

I don't think weight has anything to do with it, my daughter sat on her own around 4.5-5 months and only weighed like 10.5 pounds, she only weighs 16 now at 9.5 months. He will get it though momma! Don't worry

Well the tummy time certainly won't hurt. Do you get on the floor with him? My son loves to look at himself in the mirror, so I recently put a huge one down on the floor and we play together on our tummies and interact with the people in the mirror...he loves it!

My son was full term and just starting to sit at 6 months. And then it took a few weeks for him to sit steadily without falling over.

Try not to worry too much. I'm sure he's fine.

It takes a while for lil ones to sit on their own. I bought the Bumbo

When he could hold his head up I started putting him in this a few times a day! He'd watch TV and everything in it. Didn't take long for him to start trying to sit up on his own   doesn't happen over night! Takes time!!! Next thing you know he'll be running circles around you and you'll wish he was just still laying there

Liv can't sit fully on her own right now and the pedi said it's because she's still a little "top heavy" as in she can't hold the weight of her head completely yet, when she's sitting. But she falls forward.

My son was born at 34 weeks & is 11 months [ like 9 1/2 adjusted ] and he isn't sitting up at all. I have a physical therapist for him and she gave me a boppy pillow that I sit him in, and he has to reach for toys in front of & to the sides of him. She said tummy time is great, but my son is always on his tummy, so maybe there is more to the problem for my son.

I had this same issue with Dylan...and Mason and him were born at the same exact gestation. I found that sitting him on the floor with his legs spread and putting his hands on the floor infront of him...helped him support himself. Then I would take toys that he liked and I would hold them up eye level and then highed and he would sit up to see them. It really helped strengthen his back muscles and give him balance. In no time, he was sitting on his own.

ETA...i put pillows around him when we first started doing this.
