Vegetable oil in baby bottle? huh?

posted 23rd Jun
I just got back from taking Miracle to her pulmonary specialist doctor. Miracle is doing really well, her oxygen level is btw 97-99 which is very good. But her doctor is concerned about her weight. She said that Miracle should weigh more than what she's weighing now. Miracle weighs 11pounds 10 ounces, but she said that is too small. When I took Miracle to her peditrician, on June 12th, they said Miracle is weighing perfect and just right. So I don't know what to believe. The pulmonary doctor told me to put 2 ml of vegetable oil in every bottle from now on. She said since Miracle is getting cereal in every bottle b/c of her reflux, that the cereal is making her full and therefor she's taking in less formula. She said that cereal is empty calories, but to keep Miracle on cereal for her reflux, and add 2 ml of vegetable oil in every bottle. I called the peditrician office and left a message, so I'm waiting for them to call me back, and see what they have to say about this. I have never heard of anyone putting vegetable oil in their baby's bottle to get them to gain more weight. Have anyone heard of this before? Her peditrician said she is weighing perfect and just right, but her pulmonary doctor said she weighs too little. So who should I believe?

ETA: Miracle is also on Zantac for her reflux, but her peditrician told me to keep putting cereal in every bottle also.

Ask her Dr for a script of baby zantac for the reflux and she will not feel full anymore with the cereal in her bottle. I can't imagine vegetable oil being good for her or appetizing.

Tori had reflux and we had her on ranitidine (generic zantac) for months. She gained weight perfectly and got her appetitie back in a big hurry.

I would for sure wait to talk to your pedi first.

You know, it's so hard who to believe when it concerns your child. One pedi said our son was overweight and his new pedi says he is perfect. Even though the pulmonologist says she is underweight your pedi may say she is just fine. In our case, I look at my son and see he is thriving which to me is more important than a guess of someone looking at them once and saying they are under/over weight. In addition, your pedi as her growth chart and as long as she is progressing at a normal rate in terms of percentiles I would say that her judgement is the right one.
Good luck.
Oh, I have never heard of the vegetable oil thing....

She takes zantac for reflux too, but her peditrician told me to keep putting the cereal in every bottle too.

EXACTLY! When the pulmonary doctor told me that, I didn't know what to think. I'm waiting for the peditrician to call me now, so I can make sense of all this.

LOL, I thought the same thing! Her doctor should be calling me in the next hour, so hopefully this will all make some type of sense.

Is she BF or FF? My son is FF and he has silent GERD and seen a pulmonologist becausee of it. His pedi put him on Zantac and changed his formula to Similac Sensitive RS (rice & starch) which was better in terms of being healthier rather than empty cals of cereal.

Like I have been around the block a few times(I am 34) and been around lots and lots of babies and seen some weird crap people do like put them on washers to sleep, rub whiskey on their gums, put corn syrup in the bottles, put turnip poultices on their chests-but oil,and especially veggie oil in a bottle,no way man. That poor lil girlie will have clogged arteries by the time she's 10,lol

I have never heard of putting vegetable oil in a baby's bottle either! Her pulmonary doctor sees her every 3 weeks since she came home from the NICU on March 11th. So basically she sees her a little more often than her peditrician. Miracle goes to the peditrician for shots, and she went 2 times other than for shots. Once the peditrician calls, hopefully we can get this straightened out.

She's FF, and she's on Similac Neosure, it has extra calories in it, it's for preemies, low birth weight, and low weight babies. She was born 3 month early, and had prematurity of the lungs so she sees the pulmonary doctor to make sure her lungs are growing healthy.

Ok, I would think (and I'm no doctor) as long as she is consistenly gaining weight she is fine. And for my son's 2 month check up he was 11lbs 4 oz. Putting vegetable oil in the bottle just seems extreme (and gross). I'd love to hear your pediatrician's reaction to that suggestion.
